iv always been a b ig fan of the old brumby but iv always wondered what are they like ?... i understand their underpowered, slow etc etc but say for someone who just wanted a fuel miser to get them to and from work and out to the fishing spot on weekends/car that will go on a paddock if needed are they good is their better... i know theirs always room for improvement but are they worth the 2- 5 k everyone asks ?

I can't help with the Brumby thing but I will say I have always even as a kid been a fan of the L-Series. I got to drive a pretty much stock one yesterday for the first time in my life. It was awesome!!!!!! :mrgreen:
If I hadn't modified my Forester I would sell it and buy an L-Series.
Yes the 1.8 carby is very gutless, they are old and mostly rust but they are jsut so awesome. I think after the Foz and uni im gonna buy one.

iv owned 2 L,s so far and i have to admit id go another auto if i found one for the right price... my biggest problem is i have a 5 month old so a 4 door is ideal but i need a ute and i wanna go back to scoobydoo,s... the benz is good but it drinks like an alcoholic

i've wanted one since before i got my license.. so not that long ago i got a fixer-uper off ebay for cheap and modded it to my taste. now its good onroad, great offroad and all for less than 4g (including on road and buying the car)


most people that drive the brumbys now are OLDies that have had them since new, or enthusiasts like us (always get waves and thumbs up from other brumby pilots)

im happy to slowly modify but im over buying a car and not tliking it so ill buy one more and thats that so far the only thing iv decided on is it,ll be a suby but what model im undecided iv always wanted an old brumby ( its a ute) but i wouldnt mind a 2000 ish outback or a early 90,s impretza sportswagon... ideally it,ll be in adelaide but i have family in QLD and NSW and melbourne is a short drive down the road just means ill have to go through regency :S

MV and L-Series are two different cars.

I owned a targa top - did everything from the Simpson, carrying a motorbike, garden duties, camping in the Flinders, a summer of station work thru to cruising with my then girlfriend, on a hot summer's night down the coast with the targa windows removed, music blaring, with some coldies in the tray...

EA81 is underpowered, yes, but go forever. EJ with a big end knock = certain death, EA81s go on. And on.

Still worth the 1.5-5 mark, more in the $1.5K-2.5K though. I paid $7K from mine back in the day ('97), sold it in '01 for $8.25K! Apart from servicing, I bought 4 tyres from a wrecker - cheap motoring, AND you can park in loading zones for the full alloted time in SA.

In short, Brumbies are full of win (as Charlie would say).

I'm still driving mine after 13 years - if that says enough. Admittedly I am getting older and adherering to speed limits a little better. With the 4 speed, second is still a good gear for good acceleration. With the 5 speed L box , 3rd gets that job.

Brumbies are MY comfort level like the window winders and door handles, NVH levels.

So at this stage if my Brum was still 4 speed I'd be real sick off the gear slop fix and leaky seals. The L box far more refined - makes a better ute.

It is so versatile. I went LPG years back and at 60 cpl for the stuff - $42 for 70 litres - 575 true km. :)

Feels nice to get in my L Sedan when it has rego and feels retro grade step to get back into the Brumby - but quickly get used to it - no AC, no PS

ok well ill continue looking at most ill buy a spare ea81 and leave no part untouched with a l 5 speed otherwise ill leave it stock

1st Brumby worth it, try to pay $1,800.
2nd Yes, depending on condition (not enough photos)
3rd Hell No, ej'd brumbys are not worth that! Unless it was a hotrod shop doing the full thing. (like boyd coddington) then dont pay it.
The most you would want to pay is $10,000 and that is an emaculate vehicle with nothing to do, everything perfect!

i dont want one EJ,d i have enough trouble keeping the benz in a straight line besides i miss my rodeo so a carb,d brumby will replace that nicely

Brumbys are great little subarus. If you drive them for what they are I think they're a well balanced ute with the power thing. With Sunnie the Brumby we've loaded him up to the hill and he's done very well with the hauling and fuel usage.

Targa tops are great fun too - if you can find one for a good price. We paid what's usually the going price then put some more into him to get him registered due to the rust in the doors and under the windscreen.

I've since then put in the coupe's 6 gauge analogue instrument cluster, electric windows, central locking, power steering and AC. Next will be remote keyless entry, just need time to wire it up and then the 5 speed conversion :twisted: Also need to fix a tiny rust hole in the tray.

You'll love the little brumby - Power steering transformed the handling too, you can throw sunnie around really easily now!

Just keep looking around for one that suits your budget and be diligent in looking for rust ;)

Also - that third option brumby, I think the fella's just trying to recover the money he's already sunk into it. Best of luck to him with that price, but I'm not liking his chances!

see and it makes it easier for me then it does you guys... i dont want anything with power everything i see it as more to break and i owned a 45 series cruiser ute... im sure brumby,s cant be as rust filled as those old tanks

Classic! Did you do the colouring yourself?

With what I said about the brumby, you don't have to go doing that, it's not mandatory, I did it because it was a condition of the purchase when my now mother in law got it. I enjoyed working on it and it got me through uni for that year.

Brumbys can rust really bad if they're not looked after. Get one from an old grandpa and you'll be paying a fair sum of money but have a sweet ute that you won't have to worry about anything on. It'll probably be beige though, not my favourite subaru colour...

Haha i love the beige... Im not worried about condition as long as it works... I figure if its still going in 15yrs then it deserves to be restoed and given to the boy as his first car... Yup coloured it myself cant ya tell
