steer clear of the first gen WRX. Theyre getting long toothed now and things like gbox/clutch/etc start to let go.

id be looking at what gannon has said. Go for the later model impreza.

What year's are the first gen WRX's?

What years should i steer clear of and what years are the ones to look for??

Are Subaru's simular to holdens in the way that they have models ever 3-4 years? eg VL Commodore 86-88, VN Commodore 88-91, VP Commodore 91-93 etc...

Which are the better years and which had the most problems...i know these might sound like silly questions but im completely new to subaru's and dont know a thing about them really...:confused:

look from 2000-2007, theyd be your best option. A late original shape is also a very nice car

something with 2.0 or 2.5l

early wrx's the 'classic' shape have been known to have glass gearboxs and finding one that is original these days is hard and the price reflects that. Often un-modified wrx's go for alot more money than a modded one.

Seriously if youre not a performance freak id just get a n/a model.

I think the best piece of advice anyone can give is. Go for the model you like just remember theres always that risk of a lemon but whats a good car if you dont like it just take into account that a 2000 model is 11 yrs old and no car is immortal

What year's had "glass gearboxs"??

Im trying to do as much research as i can now, you guys have been a fantastic help so far..

Original shape - also known as GC8 - 1993-2000
Bug Eye or GDB - 2000-2007 (although bug eye headlights only lasted a year or 2 and they started looking better and better)

All WRX's have virtually the same gearbox which is virtually the same as the LX/GX/RX/RS boxes. They are all fragile - but generally only if they are given a hard time - like 5000rpm side-step the clutch launches.

If you are looking for a stock unmodified car then it will likely have had an easier life and the gearbox won't be an issue.

Just do the usual - find the newest, lowest km car that you like and can afford.

No not really

Series one ran from 1994-2001 and is known as the GC/GF (chassis code for sedan and wagon respectfully)
Series 2 ran from 2001 to 2007 and is known as the GD/GG. This included 3 styling revisions, mainly to do with the headlights, known as the 'Bug-eye" the "Blob-eye" and the last one was the "Hawk-eye"
The 3rd series has been in production since 2007 and is known as the GE/GH. This model looks a bit like a Mazda 3 hatchback.

Now the MY terminology gets a little confusing as we on this forum refer to early 1800 of the early 80's. We really should refer to them as AB/AM/AU (Sedan/Wagon/Ute) and the same goes for the L series, which we should call AC/AN/AK (Sedan/Wagon/Touring Wagon

You will notice that on carsales.com, that each year is referred to as MY99 ect. Thats just the way that they do it because the car may have left the factory in Japan in 1998, but wasnt complianced in Australia until 1999

As for the engines, they are all pretty much the same, just with different capacities. The only one to avoid is the 1994-1998 DOHC EJ25, they had headgasket issues, but seeing you are getting an Impreza, this doesnt apply to you

Thank you very much that was exactly what i was looking for...

I think im leaning towards the Series one 98/99/00/01 shape WRX as that is what i really like..

But will keep an eye out for a Series Two early WRX if one pops up...

Auto or Manual....was one better mechanically then the other?

I think it comes down to personal preference - I've got a mate that got an auto hatch WRX - neat looking car and while he loves it he wishes it was a manual as the auto doesn't have the same fun factor.

That said, and I know others have said the the early WRX's had a glassbox as a gearbox - but realistically this goes for all subarus or any vehicle for that matter. What people were doing was upping the power out put with mods then dumping all that stock power + some through the un-modified/thought about gearbox. Things tend to go bang when you don't beef up further down the drive train after some engine mods.

It's a pretty simple way of thinking when you just do up the engine without following through with everything from there back. $$$ factor adds up quick but is worthwhile in the long run!

Just had a great conversation with a mate who owns a break and cluch centre and he said exactly the same thing...he's a WRX freak and has a few himself...

He said that the auto's are generally good although a little laggy and just dont have that "fun factor". While the manual's are good until mod's a made to the engine then they temp to blow 2nd very easily...

He said for what im looking for in an un-modified car, the manual is the way to go...

Does that sound accurate?

Yeah you will definently have more fun in a manual :p
Buying something unmodded is always a best way to go. That Usually(but not always) means it hasnt been pushed too hard. With the wrx's, alot of people buy them because they want to drive like colin mcrae. So ideally look for a low k and prob best to get an racv check before hand.

in the earlier models like the 2000-2003ish the RS with the 2.5 only came in a sedan.

this puppy would be my preference if you have that much to spend
