2 into 1, What clutch and oil should i use with my ej25?

Post by guyph_01 » Sat Jul 23, 2011 2:11 am

Hi guys,

I'm having trouble getting in contact with Scott from auto clutch and i'm thinking that i might have to find some other way of getting a clutch kit. Or does anyone have contact with him?

Anyway, I've got a few questions...

1, Would anyone know another place where i can get a custom clutch made up?

2, Would i be able to buy a Heavy duty clutch kit "cable activated push type" that will match the power of the N/A EJ25 quad? I had a bad experience with the HD off the self clutch before:(

3, Since i'm using a EJ22 D/R gearbox, Will i be able to use the matching flywheel behind my EJ25 Quad? are all N/A EJ off liberty, forester, outbacks, 2wd or awd flywheels the same?

And finally, what would be a good oil to use in my engine. I don't want to buy a ridiculously priced oil but something thats reasonable and good value for money.

Note..., YES, I'm willing to spend a bit to take care of this engine:p

Any stock EJ clutch kit should do the job, as would after market units.

AFAIK the flywheels and clutch kits are the same ratings between the EJ22 and EJ25... Just steer clear of the dual mass flywheel otherwise you'll probably find yourself shelling out for an other flywheel - solid type. The dual mass develops a squeak that will drive you nuts!

Oil - just get one that suits your environment's temp range and you'll be sweet. I'm running with Penrite and I find their oils to be pretty good - then again, I'm not that fussy with oils.

Cheers

Guy you have to remember that you were using an L series box with and EJ22, now you are using an EJ box with and EJ motor. So in theory the clutch should last longer as it will mate better with the setup.

Having said that if you go rock climbing or sand dune launching every second day then it won't matter how strong the clutch is. it will wear out especially if you have 3-5 people in the car at any given time.

what oil to use, lately every shop I've been to has recommended penrite (must not be selling ...sorry Bennie)

my questions are what oil do you prefer to use? and how often will you be changing the oil?

Yep, except that the clutch disc is basically the same as the EA unit AFAIK - at least they're the same size...

The other thing Guyph is that I think you'll find that you won't have the "seat of your pants" rush when you get this engine in as the EJ22 has already done that over the EA82. I wouldn't be expecting too much more of that. Do expect a bigger fuel bill! Definitely change your 5th gear ratio to something more suitable or you'll be revving the tits off that EJ25 at cruising speed and not getting a good fuel economy figure from your driving.

Don't flog it either as the valve stems apparently flog out real quick in these heads.

All of this said, I drove Venom's EJ25 L series once and it was very smooth, responsive and torquey. It was especially torquey at low revs compared to the EJ22...

Cheers

Weird, I thought I posted some advice already but half the posts in this thread seem to be missing.

I've always heard it's good practice to use the clutch&flywheel which match the gearbox, this pretty much garantees compatibility. If you are using a gearbox from an EJ22 then I'd use a complete matching EJ22 flywheel & clutch. If you are concerned the EJ25 is heaps more powerful than an EJ22 then consider having the pressure plate clamping pressure increased, but this probably wouldn't really be necessary.

I would say that a 3rd party could have got control of the board and had a free for all needing the board to be restored to the last good profile / backup

I seem to remember you and Andrew asking about the power output of your new engine in relation to the EJ22

AUDM Subaru EJ22E 135 bhp (101 kW) @ 5800 rpm 140 ft·lbf (190 N·m) @ 4800 rpm Australian model - 100 kW (130 hp) @ 6000 rpm 189 N·m (139 ft·lbf) @ 4800 rpm

EJ25 Naturally Aspirated DOHC (1997–1999) - SAE - 165 hp (123 kW) @ 5600 rpm 162 ft·lbf (220 N·m) at 4000 rpm

30 more horsepower or so

guy i just out penrite hpr15 semi synthetic into my ej25. Its loving it so far.

ive only ever used penrite and its always been good to me.

however i put castrol edge (the full sythetic stuff) into my ej20 liberty last change and its happy running this oil.

as a side note, i was runnng thick penrite in my ej22s in my l-series ithink it was hpr40 or even 50. Then changed to a valvalene oil and it did the main bearings very quickly. This is why im now sticking with penrite oils.
