EJ 5spd Gear interchange

Post by H-top » Mon Apr 25, 2011 10:02 pm

G'day all,

I'm going to rebuild my legacy box and
want to know the interchange between
ej 5 speeds?

Can I use any ej 5 speed replacement gears?
Or do I need ones to suit my box.
Are there any special parts applicable to the
donor gear I require?

Cheers,
S

Bit early for a bump isn't it H-top??

You can swap any gearset from another EJ gearbox without issues - BUT I think it will have to be a single range gearbox as I don't think the dual range upper gearsets can be pushed off the input shaft - but I could be wrong here as I've not investigated this.

The only difference is the ratios of the gearsets and maybe the strength of 1st and 2nd in the turbo box.

I don't know of any gearsets that don't fit other than those that aren't EJ/L series gearsets.

5th gear is easily interchangeable.

I got excited, okay :)

5th gear was the gear I'm going to change.

I'm going to put a .738 5th gear in.

Yeah the 5th gear is the only one that is independent of the other gears. To change it you only need to remove the rear housing.

Super easy:

Remove top plate.

On the gear selector shaft there is a 10mm bolt that needs to be undone. Once this is undone you need to move the selector shaft out side of the gear selector forks which you can't see (just rotate it in one direction until you can pull on it freely)

Then undo all of the bolts that hold the rear housing to the front half cases. You will see 5th gear and its selector fork once you've removed this. You will also see the selector forks that the selector rod sits in - you will have to make sure it is located correctly before you close up the top plate and re-install in the subi ;)

So Sam, how did you bugger 5th gear or is this an upgrade?

Thanx Benny, seems like a breeze!

Jay, I was getting too much wheelspin in 5th
so I'm changine the ratio ;)

I'm putting in a .738 which is the tallest gear
Subaru makes. So I get better economy.

This 3800rpm at 105kph crap is getting boring....
And expensive!

That's insane!

What else have you done to the gearbox to get the revs this high at cruising speed??

Nothing mate, it's the most stupid short
ratio I've seen, one of Subaru's shortest
5th gear

.972, the size of most 4th gears

Ok that makes sense. Though that box you've got is prob geared to suit point - point sought of driving if you know what I mean, perhaps not for extended high speed driving (touring:)

It's got blistering acceleration and great
for the twisties :)

it's probably not suited to exactly what i need
but I bought it short notice and it was
the best u could afford at the time.
I did not want something That would give
up on me, I wanted DCCD and the 35/65 power
split was a bonus.

But with this 5th gear, it will suit my needs
perfectly!

Any updates on this H-top?

I was doing a search for gear ratios, then I got "stuck" reading this whole thread again - I'm a sucker for it! Hence why I'm keen to know how this 5th ratio has been going for you - and would also like to know where you sourced it from ;)

I used to have that V2 STi RA box in my RS Liberty wagon and the gear ratios were fark'n AWESOME !!

You must be running really small tyres because with my 215/40/18's I only used to be doing 3500rpm at 110kmh :-)

My Brumby is getting a V5 STi RA box with virtually the same overall ratios and I can't wait to be fanging up and down those close ratio gears .........

Yeah those tyres are 10% smaller rolling diameter - hence 10% more revs.
But I bet that made for super quick accelaration !!

It's great fun and it embarrasses some
rather expensive Cars in acceleration too :)
