Onboard tyre inflation system

Post by guyph_01 » Thu Mar 31, 2011 11:30 pm

Well yeah im keen to get one installed on my car.

Me and my bro built one on his brumby using the aircon comp as the pump. We took the air con comp apart, oiled and greased the internal bits and put it back together. Also used a 12Ltr tank in the tray. I got to say its Great. It has a auto cut off at 100psi and Pumps up the tyres in under a minute.

I would loved to do the same to my car except i'm using the Aircon comp for, well the Aircon system.

So I was wandering if anyone knew any 12v compressors that i could use. Industrial or something. I had a look at the ARB stuff but they are around the $300 mark just for the pump.
Where could i look for 12v compressors?
What type of comp do those rigs with the aftermarket air suspension use?

Could i use a car gas tank?
Any ideas?

P.s i don't want to use those portable pumps with the yellow hoses:)

Is this the same thing that you're talking about?

No this hummer system is pretty awesome but crazy expensive to do. But the pumping up tyres by a flick of a switch would be cool:)

I have been thinking a bit and came up with an idea:) and i wanted to hear you guys thoughts?

I was thinking of making a similar bracket to the one Dave made for your supercharger but instead use a second aircon compressor and use it as a air pump for my tyres with an inboard tank. I've got a few of them around:)
What do you think?

What i also wanted to ask is would there be a noticeable power loss as the engine will be turning an extra pulley.
I know The compressor won't be on all the time and will only be used when the 4wdriving is finished but would turning that extra pulley when its disengaged affect much the engine power?

Thoughts?

Thx

ive got endless air on my patrol, should have had a look at whitehills. 12volt pump, tank, pressure switches, 3 outlets around the car, and runs the air lockers too.

12 volt comps just arnt as fast as the aircon compressors, but i run two 12 volt compressors, and they fill the tank pretty quick, by the time ive moved to the next tyre, the tank is up around 90-100 psi and quickly blasts up the next tyre

and u have to remember, im ryunnning super sized tyres compared to the subarus, so would work a charm

Have you thought about trying the compressor from the Gen 1 wagon air suspension? I had one with the small tank but have a feeling I ditched it when I moved house.
Best option is air con, I used it for years on my cruiser but never bothered with a tank because of the room they take up, then when I went back to using it to keep me cool I just put 80lb in my spare & with a trans hose that was enough to get me to a servo safely.

Dave 'Subarino' was saying that the Air comp on the libs are very low pressure and that its not worth it. I'm thinking of going with my above idea of making a bracket for an extra air con comp.
Just not sure yet if i'll use a tank or not as a tank will cost a lot more.

Hey Dave 'D3v1L', I'll check out your car on the two rocks trip:)

That's what I've heard as well. They're a high pressure low volume air pump - I was considering the same setup ages ago but got the same news...

I don't think a tank would cost that much more - the biggest issue would be finding a place to mount it. I wouldn't want it in the engine bay due to the heat build up that can occur in that area.

Using the bracket idea from hatchie would probably be the best way to go.

I honestly think this is your best option by far, small, well priced & will last a hell of a long time between fills @ 3,000 psi.
Just have it set at 32psi or whatever you need & you're away, 2nd hand is better but even new isn't that bad.

If I didn't have the aircon system in my car, i'd be using the comp as an air pump. The one we modded in the brumby is so fast its why i'm desperate to do something similar. But if that bracket is hard to make i think i'll stick with a 12v ARB comp or one of those potable air pumps.

I also want to eliminate the tank as i'm not sure where i'll be able to place it under the car.

Use some imagination Guy! Anything will work if you put enough through and time into it!

I've got a SCA (super crap) portable pump. Goes alright, not the fastest thing on the face of the earth but its got me out of some sticky situations and has proven handy. Not my ultimate "settle" for piece of equipment but will be a good bridging unit until I get something better sorted such as an endless air if I can work one out.

Cheers

Yeah my mate who uses the scuba tank only carries it on trips & it sits on a bracket behind his roo bar.

As it needs no wiring I'd have it strapped inside that roof box with a hose that reached each corner, the smaller tank would be ideal.

I paid the $$ for the new ARB compressor and I love it. highly recommended.

You could hook it up to a small tank if you want.

$300 is not a lot of money compared to the stuffing around trying to DIY
