Numbers on ECU are MECF-SO6 18 07494

I have some more photos if you want them

I just committed to the EJ22 engine. Managed to get the engine, radiator, ECU and air filter housing for $1100

Holy hell that's expensive (bout double what they sell for privately in good condition). Hope it's got record low kms.

I don't think the existing ECU will run an EJ22 block properly, you might have to swap the whole EJ22 loom into your car (don't think your new engine came with one?). You might get lucky and be able to just plug the EJ22 ECU in place of the EJ18 one on the existing loom.

GOD might have some input here - he has experience with mixing and matching EJ18 and EJ22 wiring/accessories/engines - from memory I don't think it was a good experience, although that was with an EJ18 from an Impreza I think. Does the existing EJ18 engine bay have an airflow meter?

Don't say that :( A radiator by itself was going to be $250

I'm used to Landrovers, to do the engine up in my car is just shy of $5000

Has 180,000 and 6 months warranty

The car originally had an EJ22 I'm hoping I can swap back to an EJ22 maybe

;)

Jock.. Those pics look good but feel I need more to confirm a thought I have about the car. Please hold off buying that engine unless you are able to secure the wiring loom (both front sections). I need some pics around the VIN on the firewall and also some interior shots (please include dash shots). How long ago did you buy this vehicle and do you still know the previous owner? or able to contact them?

Just so you don't worry but I feel your vehicle is an Import Legacy, which was available in Japan with an EJ18 SPFI engine and someone (unbeknown to you) has done a VIN/Compliance plate swap. You may be best to buy a EJ18 from any early Impreza (you need only the long motor with no ancillaries) and use your manifolds and dizzy but I'd like more pics to confirm.

From the pics and your first post mentioning it's a Legacy, I feel it best to have this sorted before you go buying/outlaying any money.

Sorry but wanting to help you even more now :???:

Hey mate

Turning into a bit of a saga hey ;)

Heres some pics I took this morning (last photo is the mess under the steering, could be the mods to the loom from fitting the EJ18? )

I'll head into work now and get some more

Bought the car about 10 months ago, no I don't still know them which is a bugger

I'll be looking a bit more closely at cars now

A little Jock but don't be concerned.. it's still a great car.. I'm just trying to make sure you buy the correct engine. My best guess at the moment would be to buy another EJ18 and fit all your gear on it. Mainly because that model engine (Single Point Fuel Injection) didn't come out in Australia but you can fit the EJ22 if you like (would be a power upgrade) but you'll all the wiring looms.

Oh.. and forgot to mention, the wiring under the dash looks like it's just from someone fitting an alarm/immobilizer with central locking attachment.

Looks different to any of my EJs. I see no injectors, ignition coil on the firewall, plug leads going in a funny direction, so Paul's theory of an SPFI EJ18 sounds right.

You should be able to drop in the new EJ22 long motor and bolt on your current manifold and electronics. This will run it*, but not perfectly - expect rough idle, less than max power output. A replacement EJ18 short motor would be the best/easiest (though harder to find than a 22). You could use the new EJ22, and install the matching EJ22 ECU and wiring harness, but that's a lot of work.

I wouldn't expect the new EJ22 ECU to plug into the wiring in your car.

Can you see how many plugs are on the ECU in the car?
Does the VIN on the compliance plate match that stamped elsewhere on the car?
Does the current engine have a distributor?

Dane.

*This is my experience. YMMV.

Well just saw the sticker under the bonnet it says EJ18

And seeing as none of the numbers on the compliance plate match those on the firewall seems a bit wierd?

Looks like I'll can the EJ22 and start looking for an EJ18 :p ( just like the one that was posted up before, at the auction sale that ended today :p )

Well the conclusion

Pretty sure now that you fellas are on the money

.the engine looks factory
.a lot of the stickers are in japanese
.the numbers stamped on the chassis don't match the compliance plates
.the sticker up under the bonnet (written in japanese) states EJ18
.the compliance plates look to be riveted on with normal pop rivets

Where do I find the engine no. on a Subie? Be interesting to compare the engine no. as compared to the one on the rego details

Jock I ask if it has vacuum advance because if it doesn't there is a good chance that the dizzy is on a shaft which comes off the end of the cam. which is not removable (the dizzy is) the shaft stays with the cam. :(

Engine number is on the passenger side sort of above the starter motor next to where the gear box joins on.

Yeah Jock from all those pics I'm 100% confident the car was originally an import.

Like Tom mentioned.. the engine number is on the bell housing LHR of the engine.

Chrome door handles are a dead give away for an import, all of ours were body coloured.
