Help carby-fuel EA81 with Hitachi carb

Post by olddog642 » Mon Aug 23, 2010 9:48 pm

Help! when I first start my Brumby it runs for about 30 seconds then stops it then will then start again but stop running after about 3-5 seconds. I leave it for awhile and the same thing happens then eventually it starts, runs and stays running no more problems untill the next time I go to start it after it has been stopped for few hours or overnight the same situation all over again.
I've checked and replaced the filters and fuel pump electrical connections and even had the carb completely rebuilt with new seals and bushes etc.
No vacumm or air leaks are evident.
I think I saw a similar post but unable to locate it.
Stumped at this stage

is it fuel or spark? You must have found the fuel window in carb? with a sandblasted dot right in the middle where fuel float level should be. When it won't start test for no spark. Belco autopro used to stock the ignition modules by ACA for about a hundred, try swapping dizzies between the two, or just modules to see if the problem goes with module

Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips,
well I checked everything from fuel to spark including filters, and pump all appeared to be working okay so I rigged up a gravity feed fuel supply and this worked so reconnected the fuel line from pump and all is working as it should. Starts runs and keeps on running I've tested it over the last couple of days starting in the early morning at -2 deg and in the middle of the day at 13deg yep she still does what it should starts and runs. So buggered if I know what the cause of the problem was.
Just as a matter of interest is this the ignition module that is positioned up under the dash near the steering column.

Hey Hylton - those Hitachi carb's were not built to last (or at least stay in tune) there can be allsorts of little issues that you will chase forever with them.
I junked my Hitachi for a Weber (got it from Dave at re carb in Australia) much improved power, starting and economy.
Maybe try and swap your carb for another which you know is OK before (if) you splash out on a weber.
The front cut Brumby's carb we got here is a totally differant set up to the UK ones - in that you guy's have all that vapour catch stuff to complicate matters with (we do have it but its down at the filler neck and quite simple just for the gas tank issues)
I must say that looking at the Brumby set up we got from OZ - I would be tempted to strip it all out and go simple if I thought I could.
My engine tuner friend here told me that the Hitachi's had a bad reputation here and that they wore in critical area's in the carb (sliders and bores) and that you could not replace these parts.
Try grab a good replacement first or you could be chasing your tail mate!

Oh almost forgot - I put a new fuel pump on my truck too when I put the carb on. So ensuring a sound supply of the good stuff to where it was needed!
Can give you details of my chosen pump if ya like ( cant just remember at the mo). Used a pressure regulator too so we could play with it a little.
The old pump was hit and miss - OK on the level but if you wanted to gun it - it wouldn't give the flow needed to give you the revs.
New pump - problem fixed.

Giles.

Thanks for that Giles,
I just had the Hitachi carb rebuilt, but yes the anti pollution crap that is on our vehicles is way over what was required. To be honest the Aussie Brumby setup is a drama waiting to happen.
When you have a chance pm or email the pump details.
At the present time she is going but as yet to get her registered and then I'll be able to give her a good road test.

Hey Hylton,

It did sound like a fuel issue.. either pump pressure, fuel filter (remember there is one in the rear near the tank) or auto choke. I remember a few years ago we had a similar issue and it was the wrong fuel filter fitted up front. It needed to have the filter with the little bleed off on top.

Cheers,
Paul

Oh, rings some bells here now. I had a problem (think the previous owner did too :) ) that was finally fixed by blowing compressed air back down all the steel lines to a disconnected pipe further back - only when I blew from the rear mounted pump line to the tank with empty tank and sender unit removed - did I fix it - with a THOONK, rusty grotty grit landed in my pristine tank.
