Looking for bigger tyres, need advice

Hey guys,

I own a 1983 4WD GL Wagon (EA81), I currently have 14 In tyres on it but, due to being serious about offroading, this does not satisfy me, I am interested in just how much bigger rims and tyres could I fit to this without changing the rotors or anything like that over, if this is not possible I will look into modification of running gear. Any help is appreciated.

you have 14" rims, how big are your tyres?

If you go bigger than 27/8.5/14 you will not have the power to turn them so i wouldn't go any bigger than that.

hahah so true
but im pretty sure you cant get much bigger than the above size for 14's and even they are fairly rare but there are some in NSW and VIC for sale.

When you say I won't have the power to turn the wheels, you do mean I won't have the engine capacity, right? I know this probably sounds stupid but you don't mean my tyres will hit on the subframe or anything like that? because I would really appreciate bigger than that and as the car is fitted with a torsion bar and adjustable suspension, clearance is not really an issue as more can be obtained easily, however I would definitely settle for 27/8.5/14.

I had that size tyre on my old 82 MY wagon, It was real good off road and with a 3" lift I never had a problem, well when I say never I mean no more then bigger 4x4s had.

The only problem I had was on the highway, a big lack of power on big hills, I would speed up (like 110kph) when I could see a hill cuming up and by the time I got to the top I was back down to 90kph or worse on real steep hills.

A friend of mine had a Brumby with 15" wheels with BFG/MT, but he had a lot more power than me with his turbo engine and a lighter car, but even he had to go down a gear on steep hills on the highway.

If I were you I would keep with the 27/8.5/14 and check that your diff is a 3.9. but I think the MY 83 had a 3.7 It dose not sound like much but it makes a big diference.
