Ceramic coating for EA82T head ??

Post by steptoe » Fri Jan 08, 2010 10:32 pm

Disco, one for you. Coz I know you coated your previously loved piston crowns

With the words of my machine shop guy reflecting on the extra heat stresses placed on my EA82T cylinder head coz I run LPG and boost it 6psi - playing in the front of my mind- I wonder if ceramic coating the roof top of the combustion chamber would be (a) possible (b) reliable and stay stuck to it (c) any benefit in keeping heat in chamber and out the appropriate path towards the turbo? (d) affordable ?

ok so im not disco what ya gonna do
pistons would be worth it, head is probably not so worth doing ive heard its increadibly hard to do. Most people who need it for race engines have a head made up thats made from a stronger/heat resistant alloy.
Valves could be worth getting done though.

I don't know of anyone doing a Subaru head , provided the casting could be cleaned I don't think it would do any harm .
My pistons were done because EA82T's don't have piston oil squirters like late OE turbo engines do and to remove damaged pistons is a long and expensive process .
The exhaust valves were done to keep some of the conducted heat out of the stems/guides/head castings . If the inlet valve faces were done it may help reduce the slight pre heating your inlet charge gets flowing in over a hot inlet valve but this is really race engine stuff where budgets are high .

I am slowly losing the love hate relationship with my EA82T because its fought me every step of the way .
If you really like your L Series and have some money to spend you could look into the legalities of gas and an EJ engine . Or buy an early Lib and gas that .

I'm in too deep and will get mine there but the cost is not justifiable .

Cheers A .

HPC do it, they told me they coat anything, but goodness knows how long the coating stays there! They can do ceramic and differnt thicknesses of teflon for worn parts too apparently. And yes, they do subaru stuff.

0732058115, brendale I think.
