First Car - 1997 SUBARU IMPREZA N MY97 RX AWD

Post by Obscure » Tue Jan 05, 2010 7:06 pm

Hello everyone,

New member here but a long time lover of the Subaru's.

I have saved up around $5000 for a first car and obviously I am pretty set on an Impreza of sorts.

I am located in WA and as such found this http://tiny.cc/5ygHr

The only thing that stands out that may be a problem is the amount of Km's but I know it is a well built car and should still be good.

Are you able to possibly pick up a second hand engine for a good price at any places? Or what precautions should I take?

Many thanks for your input.

welcome to the board

thats a nice score for the money you want to pay and it is ONO so haggle

there are many ways to get a new engine

a front cut low km import which conceivably could come with a gearbox as well

bid on write off (right off / rite off) in an auction

with these engines little is known of the history

you either get lucky and get a great engine or you get a lemon

Haha okay maybe that was a poor choice of wording.

Thank you to both of you for the advice though. Welcome more :)

Firstly, welcome to ausubaru forum...
Nice ride/buy mate, 278,000kms... thats nothing! (mine (Liberty) is now 310,000kms and will last beyond 400,000 or more.) If it has a good service history and if it has been well serviced etc & country car, it'll last longer than that...
Since you're in WA - cannot tell you good places where you could get the engines from.

But if you were in Eastern States of Aus, you could find an 2nd engine with unknown history for low as $200 upwards. My argument with engines is best to get it rebuilt if it needs to, that way it has original rebuilt engine and you know the engine was running okay-ish before rebuild.

Another thing I noticed in your pics... Its not dual range AWD, so it could be single range AWD or FWD - Am I right? Thought AWD models had disc brakes in rear?? I'm not an Impreza person.
Cheers

Came across this beauty, costs a little more but looks overall like a better car / deal.
