cleaning EA82 cambox grooves

I have another post in here asking for sources of cheap wire brush to suit rotary style tools like the Dremel. I use them in the clean up of the EA82 cambox sealant grooves which I find Permatex Ultra grey silicone just does not wanna leave. It does not react and break down when drowned in turps. I plan to email permatex to ask of a suitable solvent.

I have found though to cut the edge of the bead with a stanly knife style blade and scrape the endless old silicone with a precision type screwdriver. Only ever use may be for this task.

Part of my trouble is due to wanting to retain cam in casing to save good seals so trying to keep cam and its oil galleries clean of silicone at same time makes job a little more fiddly.

I am getting there. While on the task may just clean another spare pair without their cams to have on hand for use at a later date

I HATE that cleaning task! The EA82 should've had more headwork made in the pre production process to have the head and cam mounting as one unit like the EJ... That's one of the reasons in the list for the EJ, that and the EJ is much cheaper to run day to day (and keeps me looking like ).

Hope you get something sorted, that grey stuff sounds like the go to seal it good and proper!

SORTED !

Those cheapy brush sets on display at various places, one steel, one brass the other nylon bristles - almost toothbrush shape Brumby brand. I tend to buy them and put 'em away for days like today. Got them out. Googled to find there is an RTV silicone cleaner/remover stuff - in the US.

Not got the best working posture, kneeling on cardboard sheets but got stuck into them, two lefts, two rights and found the affordable Australian Export degreaser from say, supercheap, applied neat to this sili stuff sends it all gooey , soft.

Also used the cheap woolies green scouring pads, one per box, and kept up the tiny screwdriver in the grooves

It also disolves Mr Ansells cheap gloves very quickly, so my hands feel like erk at present.

Pulled the cams outta one set, also removing to clean the oil spray bar for the cams. Cleaned inside, outside, washed out and blow dried.

Next, for my spare set to put away.....


My machine shop guy reckons I need cast iron heads for the heat my LPG turbo combo is or was creating to blow my head gasket and ripple head face !

Another memorable afternoon spent picking out dirty, oily, grott laden camboxes and rocker covers from EA82's in the garden shed.In an effort to reduce filth just sitting around..... they first copped a spray down of the above degreaser, a slice or two with a stanley knife utility blade, to cut the cam box seal grooves, scrape with the mini screw driver down said grooves, scrub with the cheap pot scourer sponges, cheapy wire brush, then a hot tub with plenty of handy andy and another final scrub, rinse and air blow dry - and I have my spares ready for an exchange basis should I ever need them again. "Of course you will" I hear the EJ converts muttering Yuk, still got the taste of degreaser in me mouth
