L series gearbox to 92 liberty
L series gearbox to 92 liberty
I would like to make my liberty more of an off roader(not to radical) i understand the auto and 4wd setup at the moment is less than useless. Can anyone tell me where to start or point me in the way of threads. Thanks Al

Can be done but why you want to change from AWD to part time 4WD?
You'll have to change the driveline as well as it's shorter, the P/T 4WD box is shorter than EJ box.
Are you planning to convert to manual?
Cheers

I can see the merit in doing this - the L series PT4wd box is a 4wd gearbox as the drive front and rear IS 50/50 when 4wd is engaged. Where as the liberty AWD boxes only have a light limited slip diff on one side of the centre diff for the front wheels.
There was a forester from the US that had an L series box installed for that exact reason - they wanted the best box for offroading.
My L series now runs an EJ series motor with the L series gearbox in an EJ gearbox casing. I did this to avoid an adaptor plate and to retain the factory EJ clutch, which I believe is larger or stronger than the factory L series unit.
The other way to do it is to source an L series box, and make an adaptor plate to mount the L box to the EJ motor. You'll need the L series clutch and flywheel - the holes on the flywheel need to be slotted to fit the EJ crankshaft and you'll need the L series starter motor.
Either way you do it you'll need to lenghten the tail shaft (dunno if an L series two piece will fit), use the L series gear selectors, create a new gearbox crossmember and source a liberty pedal box to make use of the clutch cable. A liberty clutch cable should do the job without a problem.
There's really not any threads on this type of gearbox conversion - the only info I can give you is that of my gearbox mod. You can find this in my conversions and restoration page under the "bennies Ej conversion and some other bits too" thread title. There's a lot to fish through. If you want I can tell you what I've done with some pics
Cheers

Yeah you're right you can convert the low range from L series in Liberty gearbox, see my thread in my signature.

El Freddo that first paragraph is not strictly speaking true . What the EJ AWD boxes have is a viscous "drag" to limit the differentiation that the center dif achieves .
If you think about it the diff lock in the L AWD box only locks one side of the center diff but that still prevents it working like a differential .
Did that fella in NZ ever prove conclusively that there was an EJ AWD box with a lockable center diff ?
A .
