Dude you have an L series wagon, and u wanna buy a different L series so you can go offroading in the bush? *head explodes*

Just use your car!

Looks like an excellent example. Put a lift kit in, maybe think about an EJ swap later on. I wouldn't let such a good car go. If you are concerned about "bashing around offroad" don't be, just be a little careful and take care. There is no reason at all for a car to get damaged going offroad unless you have an accident, just be careful.

Looks like you've changed passenger side CV yourself at some stage, I can see all the greasy hand marks on the bottom of the bullbar :) The mark of a true enthusiast (or a dirty mechanic).

lol ... nah, havent done the CV's but it did have a new clutch and waterpump put in. Well spotted though.

Yea, its a matter of economy really. The RX is a lot cheaper, but needs rebuild, but does already have the EJ22 in it.

The current EA82 motor is pretty gutless and I really need some more grunt.
Tell me, does putting a Weber on an EA82 make much difference ?

A rebuild of an Ej22 will be about $700+ if you do it yourself, Cheaper to drop another motor in. But fatz car is a good offroad vehicle!

I had an L pretty much the same as yours, Pretty good nick and i still went where the others down here went in it, Just have to be more careful! I only had 14's with road tires, no lift or anything in it!

But a nice looking car, Congrats!

I'd recommend;

- buying the other car
- sourcing a good EJ22 just the bare motor
- transferring the wiring harness, fuel system etc from the other car into yours and substitute the good EJ22
- If you have time, put your EA82 into the other car and sell it again. Might not be worth it tho. Might be better to just keep the other car for parts.

That should work out nice and cheap and allows you to keep your awesome L series.

So the conversion isnt an overly complicated one ?

The only other subaru Ive owned was an 85 RX Turbo, and she went really well, but my recently purchased suby is just so dissapointing in the power department. Feels like im driving around with the handbrake on.

Well it depends, If you use the ea82 box, you need an adapter plate, or if the liberty box is used then you need a custom tailshaft and cross member, Buy both are easily sorted, and the wiring isnt too difficult either. But we knocked one over Iin a weekend a few months back.
For an idea, look at el freddo's thread, he has detailed everything needed!

thats a nice looking l series you have there punisher!

would be a shame to beat it up offroad

adam(fatz)'s RX is setup nicely for offroad, you wont be dissapointed in it if you go that way, and youll have a few bucks left over!!!

on the other hand, ill have an adapter plate and l series dual range up for sale soon (converting mine to auto)

talking about driving with the handbrake on that sounds like my l series those 27's really take it out of the old girl added to the 330 000 odd klms on the clock. Maybe you could do an exchange motor i did in my old liberty went from the 2.2 to the 2.5 quad and that was pretty cheap. plus the ea82's are worth more last time i looked into it.
l series 2" lift 27"boots s/s snorkel full roof racks.
past ride 92 lib gen2 fwd wit a 2.5 quad cam conversion custom exhaust and cold air induction.

If i did my L series I would probably go the auto aswell.
How much could I expect to get for my ea82 and dual range box ?

a lot more than you will get for the l series stuff :(

getting harder to find at the moment too...

wreckers will want a grand or more for a motor, probably get them cheaper from an importer, but then you gotta add freight on top...

second had if your lucky they start from a carton of beer upwards....

So is there anything that can be done to get some extra grunt out of the ea82 or isnt it worth the trouble?

get some who has an ej to tow you around.
there are a few little things i've heard of doing but never tried them if you google it there is a web site from the states that give a list.
i'm in the same boat i was told by a mate that his mechanic told him to by the lseries wit the ea82 but then i found out that it has a bit less grunt than the ea81.
i would sell the lseries and buy a gen2 liberty you've already got the ej and its more comfortable and you can fit bigger tyres under them with out putting in a massive lift.
l series 2" lift 27"boots s/s snorkel full roof racks.
