L Series temp gauge fan cut in pont??

Post by steptoe » Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:22 am

Where is your L Series temp gauge when the thermo fans cut in? I think my gauge is suspect. For 30,000km it has moved from nothing to quarter gradually as car warms up and has NEVER gone above quarter in any heat, with air con on when it was there, up mountain climbs etc. My digital engine watchdog shows engine metal temp runs between 70 and 90 degrees and engine water temp gauge in dash never changes. beginning to think this was another problem Cheap Grief had in its previous life and why its new import engine was cooked. The thermo fans cut in at 86 or 87, so I would expect the gauge to read a mm or so above halfway at this point , but no movement above quarter. Glad I have the other gauge.

On my L with both the MPFI and the carbie EA's the thermos kicked in at 91 degrees all the time - I've got a mechanical aftermarket temperature guage tapped into the water out to heater line...

I found that with the dash guage, when 4wd'n without the second thermo on, as the AM (aftermarket) guage was headed towards the 100 degree mark the dash guage would sky rocket. At about 110 the dash guage would be on the lower white marker of the red hot section. I've had the dash guage off the scales before the AM guage so I dread to think what the actual temp was! That motor got a new set of head gaskets and a new water pump after that event.

Never rely on the manufacture's guages as they can be manipulated for the want of the market... I've heard of ford in the 60's that had their tacho changed so it could show the V8 redlining cos that's what the marked wanted, the motor was probabily only doing 4000 or so revs when the guage was red lining... I'm sure there's been plenty of this going on in the industry over the years.

Cheers

and all this while, reading of other l Sries overheating issues I've said mine has been great, never moved above quarter - must be telling lies. An extra gauge is well worth an investment. Time to employ an oil pressure gauge I have had for some years.

What about a temperature guage?!

my digital engine watchdog IS a temperature gauge, gauging engine metal temp ! Alarm is set to go off at 86, just after thermo fan cut in point

for further insurance, wire the ignition wire in to the sensor so the engine is killed if the temp is exceeded, in case you miss seeing the gauge.

nice idea for anti theft but I have my alarm set too low for that idea. Not hard to wind temp up or down, but the oil pressure light connection would prevent starting!

My father in laws truck has its injector pump solenoid wired in series with the oil pressure switch. Stops the engine if oil pressure drops, and the button on the dash has to be pressed while starting (makes a great anti theft device)

Be very careful wiring in devices that cut your engine without warning , the day you duck across a road with a B Double on the aproach at it dies half way ... If the missus or some other was driving it ...
