Whats this circlip for??

Post by subybrumby » Thu Oct 22, 2009 7:57 pm

Funny Story

Mate at work is a real 4x4 freak. He was a subaru man but went into a toyota twin cab 4x4 hi-lux, Goes away for days on his own, climbs mountains, outback, rivers creeks etc. Real Marlboro man. And he's a great bloke. Sits around the fire on his own with the harmonica..got the picture...

He does a gearbox oil change the other day and out with the oil came a chewed up circlip. What do you reckon he did. Yep. Shrugged his shoulders and threw it away. Can't be important, its pretty small.

Back into the wild he goes, 4 wheel driving in the bush, where he loves it.

He comes back to Toowoomba and was driving down the main street and clink clink, clunk clunk, thunk thunk. stop. The hilux finished the trip to his house on a tilt tray. Let the oil go and this time out came remains of gear tooth. Jeez I laughed when he told me at work. He taking tomorrow off to start removing the box. Been quoted about $1300 for an exchange with warranty.

Moral to the story:- Any foreign objects in your oils, especially circlips, well there in the box to hold something on.;)

Of course... Always always find out where it is coming from, It could be very important piece, always keep little pieces, no matter what It could've been/from as it could be very important.
For as a service tech, a lot of people had broken down machines and they dont realise that there is missing pieces and they "shrugs" their shoulders and throw it away, when i come across, you're missing something and they goes... oh its in the bin then I have a go at them! Doesnt matter what it is, keep it!

You gotta give him credit for changing the oil in the first place.

Agreed! I always check and waggle my fingers in oil to find anything, and slowly drain oils out and see if you can see anything in it... so far nothing ;)

Yeah its like that after building a gearbox! Its kinda funny as I've been pretty anxious after an engine rebuild - just about things that could go wrong, but after a gearbox rebuild and the EJ conversion I haven't thought twice about it all. Gearbox is still going well although it crunches 3rd and 5th :(

Bit of a funny story about the bloke... I wonder what his reactions would've been had it been a tooth or two..

Cheers

Hehe ditto too!
I did a oil change as well after 2000kms since I installed the gearbox that I fitted low range in, so far so good, only crunches in 1st gear if you're too quick (ie. reverse then straight in 1st and not give it time)

I've also found that putting it into neutral, then taking the foot off the clutch the EJ's rev's drop off considerably. I don't know why but would like to know what's so tight in there that its pulling on the motor at idle...
