new addition plus the already resident

Post by red_rocket » Fri Jul 24, 2009 2:52 am

well guys, i have been on here a while and haven't even posted up a pic of my current go to car. But today there is another addition which is going to be turned into a bit of an everyday driver/offroad go getter.
pics as follows.

pride and joy(MY99 WRX):
Image

then the new addition has a blown head gasket, needs a clean, straight body with minimal rust and slightly lifted with 14's-a good list of mods in the waiting, a new heart and a manual gearbox(which i have) for a start.
its a 1989 Touring Wagon:

i will also be on the look out for a manual dash, roof rack for touring wagon, bullbar and possibly a second hand 4"lift soon, plus the EJ22 not to mention.
If any of you guys have any of these parts lying around that would be great.

cheers

I swear I've seen that wrx driving around too!...... everytime I see a green wrx :)

I have a few parts lying around that may be of use to you, thinking of getting rid of them;
- 3" lift kit secondhand to suit L series
- Irvine brand bumper-replacement bullbar to suit L series (you can kinda see it in my signature below)
- EJ22 engine (~250,000kms works perfect) with already cutdown loom and ECU, adaptor plate, brand new heavy duty clutch, pretty much ready to drop straight into an L series.

Drop me a PM if interested...

updates:
have fiddled with the stereo, re done the wiring and secured that in place no dramas(as it was budgo). now just got to find a nice finish to it.

also discovered what is ahead of me 'rust wise'-got the winscreen removed today for a 6 pack, here are some pics. Any advice on how to tackle this will be helpful as this is my first time and i only have a fair idea.
sand paper/angel grinde, rust pretentative stuff, fill,re-sand, re-paint...? done??

There is a couple of threads here that some people have fixed theirs.

The rust around the windows is fairly bad but fixable as diy, certainly uneconomic to pay someone else to do it.

Have you taken the front guards off? check the A pillars, the steel around the front door hinges have a tendency to rust away and needs to be rebuilt.
sand paper/angel grinde, rust pretentative stuff, fill,re-sand, re-paint...? done??
NO, that won't work

1. you need a welder.
2. you need to cut that rusty metal off with aviation snips or grinder
3. Get steel plate and cut and bend to shape, very tedious but doable,
bench vice essential. lots of tapping with a steel punch to form round bends, bit hard to explain in words.
after some practice you'll get the hang of it, you have lots to do.
4. weld the new steel plates in.
5. use rust converter stuff as a primer

BUT then seeing the rust there is in the sills and the evidence above the rear wheel has me thinking the rust is endemic within. I've fixed some very bad rust on a Lseries but imho this car should have a date with the crusher sadly.:(

thanks for the input, that welding option just may be out of my reach as i don't have the materials or knowledge to do so. Also have never really heard this method of anyone...

attacked the whell arch(rear whell) yesterday and that is all done....was basically surface rust hey, piece of piss. just have to sand back a little and re-coat again.

both door hinges/guards have rust on them, will get to them in more depth soon, once i get the car out of the garage(be4 mum spits it). But for now i can see that it isn't THAT bad, definatly DIY.

the winscreen is the mother of all jobs for me at the moment, looking very average.
I will post up pics of the end product when i'm done also.

Crusher....not sure about that, maybe the pics look worse than they actually are.
It isn't too bad

Something you might have a think about - There are places out there that restores items even old cars or fix rusted up cars, they wont be cheap but the job will be done. I know there is one in Northcote in Melbourne that does it, he told me once a few years back - 10sq cm is $350

yeah it is a thought if things are a bit hairy. I know of one panel beater here in perth who i usually go to who would do it for cashy. but me and the old man will give it a crack as he has just done his winscreen.

Have been working on the winscreen over the weekend and here are some finishing pics, now i am no expert(first time) so please easy on the criticism. All the rust was taken away with a drill peice attachment form bunnings which worked a treat and then finished off with sand paper, then used rust converter before filling. A few nice holes came up after that which i ended up using aluminum mesh for the backing and filled over that, nice and strong now!

i'm pretty happy with the job and it has enough rust resistant stuff on there to last for another 20 years i reckon. If you compare to the first pics i posted it looks half alright.
anyway some pics of the end product, still needs winscreen, air vents and trims to go back on soon.

Nice work on the car, Reminds me when i was doing mine up.... I did very similar to what you have done except i cut out the bad rust spots and used fibreglass instead of welding:P Its no classic and will surely hold long enough:P Still have some mods to do but she is great.

P.s I think we were at andrews place last weekend for parts:)

Well, it has been a while since i have posted up anything about the project.....BUT it has not just been sitting here with me doing nothing like most projects.

since Aug i have been away for a few weeks so that halted things but i have picked up

1-EJ22 with about 220000kms on it plus ECU, wiring etc
2-Manual cluster
3-4" lift kit
4-Manual pedal setup
5-manual likages etc
6-flares
7-maual gearbox

still need:
1-Dual core radiator
2-adapter plate(in the proccess of getting made)
3-beeefed up pressure plate
4-rear diff/3.7(may have coming)

If you guys have any other ideas about what i may be missing out let me know.

This weekend i hope to pick up another car with guyph(which has the 4" lift, pedal kit etc) for $400 each and either start to take out the lift kit and pedal kit or leave that for now and start taking out the engine on my car.

Any help from the perth boys on this site would be great if you are free and time. The more hands and ideas around would make it more enjoyable. Beer supplied ofcourse.

will post up updates soon.

Cheers
