Post by Matt » Sun Jun 28, 2009 7:40 pm

What Model came out with 5 speeed dual range AWD Boxs (Mated to a EA82/T)? What the easiest way to tell from the outside? Does any one have any pics of one outside the Car?

Thanks
Matt

You pretty much have to find a 88+ vortex 4wd turbo to find what you are looking for in Australia
Current rides: 2016 Mitsubishi Triton GLS & 2004 Forester X
Ongoing Project/Toy: 1987 RX Turbo EA82T, Speeduino ECU, Coil-pack ignition, 440cc Injectors, KONI adjustale front struts, Hybrid L Series/ Liberty AWD 5sp
Past rides: 92 L series turbo converted wagon, 83 Leone GL Sedan, 2004 Liberty GT Sedan & 2001 Outback

Vortex was never dual range, only single range with the diff lock. Dual Range AWD was out of the RX/II Coupe's or GT/II Wags both JDM OR USDM. they can be identified by the vacuum pod that works the center diff lock, but dont confuse it with the Single Range Push-Button 4WD L series box, which also has a vacuum pod that engages the 4WD. the difference is where the cable goes. The push button Part time 4WD has the cable working the 4WD selector rods at the top of the gearbox, the AWD one has it working a lever on the side.
Oh, and Vortex's went AWD, Hotwire and Spider in june '87.

Good luck finding one of these vortex's - I've only once seen one in a yard, minus the gearbox and rear disc brakes (4wd version obviously) and no spider intake - it was the standard MPFI intake... All the vortex's I've seen have been front wheel drive N/A units - one or two have been turbo'd front wheel drives :(

I might be able to russle up some pics for you in the next fortnight - I'm currently way from home for some time :???:

My advice: Keep your eye's peeled - and if you find one tell no-body until its in your possession

Cheers

I agree!!! if you find one, keep it yourself then tell everyone that you sourced something rare!!!!!

The other option is to convert EJ internals inside EA box. Then you'll have AWD in EA box with dual range. (same as liberty box, but Liberty's EJ is about 15mm longer?).

Sounds good. It would have 1.19:1 low range not 1.59:1. (only way to know if its AWD, is have a feel the selector if it goes in three positions, FWD - 4WD High & 4WD Low thats 4WD box.. If its just 4WD High & 4WD Low then its AWD box.

Lucky you! But you forgot my bit of advice from above

Bugger about the rust, I hope you are a master at sheet metal work! Best of luck with it - and throw up some pics of it when you get it home!
