90 Brumby 4speed DR Workshop Manual

Post by Phil » Fri May 29, 2009 7:21 am

Hi All - i have just began to restore a Brumby and I have started with Motor and gearbox. While trying to remove the retaining cover on the gear box spline I snapped it because i didn't know about it being retained by a circlip on the INSIDE of the box. After reading here i found out. I have searched the net and found tech guides for nearly everything for the Brumby but no guide for the gearbox.I have began to split the box but i would prefer to have a guide to make sure i am doing it right ie: torque settings, gaps, etc. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Matt for taking the time to reply, The link you sent me is great(very detailed of motor rebuild will come in handy) but unfortunately does not have any info on gearboxes. When i finish pulling the box apart I will post some pics of the offending clip. Still looking for gearbox workshop manual or advice on gearbox. anyone?

Pix of Input Shaft

Post by Phil » Sun May 31, 2009 6:17 pm

Hi Mat / Everybody
I have started to split the GB and the input shaft came out easily but I cannot split the box I have tried everything but it is stuck tight at the bottom of the box near the extension housing. It is close to splitting but i cant find what is holding it together. I am restoring a Brumby and have had years of repairing cars- changing clutches , brakes ,shocks, electrical, body work, carbies but this is the first time on opening a box and am finding this one difficult. But I am determined to recon the box. Is there are any Subie Yoda's out there who can enlighten this GB newbie as I do not want to apply the Force (hammers) to this box as I already broke the cover and do not want to repeat that brilliant trick again.
Really enjoying restoring the Brumby.
Thanks for any help

Further Progress but need Advice

Post by Phil » Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:15 pm

Hi All,
I have progressed slightly with the box (couldn't find a comprehensive workshop manual) and have removed the rear extension housing , I now have to remove the middle housing which i believe is being held back by the rear drive gear. This is held in place by a 32 mm ? nut on a shaft with a 2 mm cross head , looks like a special tool is used something like a 32 mm tube socket with a cross head shaft inside it. Any way just asking if some one has any handy hints. So far all the gears and syncros look in really good condition,
lot of work though just to replace front oil seal / O Ring :???:
