Help! Replaced timing belt and car wont start!

Post by Psymon » Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:55 pm

Long story short, i was driving my EA82 powered L series home the other night when it just suddenly stopped running. Towed it home and checked and it had snapped one timing belt.

Replaced the timing belts with spares i had tonight and now the car wont start. We've triple checked that we got the cam timing right and it looks fine.

Car turns over but seems to be backfiring through the carby. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on?

LOL Exact same thing happen to my brothers L... The timing is out trust me... Enusre the following

1. Insure the Flywheel is at exactly 0 Degreees
2. Check that the Left Hand Cam mark lines up with the top mark. (read Passengers side)
3. Check that the Right Hand Cam Mark lines up with the bottom mark. (read Drivers Side)
4. Rotate the engine by hand a couple of times to make sure you have done it right.

The cams should be 180 degrees out from each other at 0 Degrees. The sysptoms sound like you did what my bro did when he set both cams to the top mark at 0 Degrees....

Haha... now that you mentioned that i decided to read my gregory's! Seems i'm meant to line up the left cam first then tension it, then rotate the crank exactly one turn clockwise then line up the right hand cam. Sound about right?

I just got the crank to tdc and lined up both cams at the top. I thought everything was going too smoothly for my first subaru timing belt! :P

Do not do it off TDC. There is 3 small marks on the fly wheel you have to do it from. They are all within 10mm or so. If you go TDC it will not work.

I did. Fixed the timing belt up tonight and it still wouldn't start, so we sat around scratching our heads for a while. Checked the distributor and it was about 90 degrees out somehow! :S Put it back where it should be and it started first go. Just gotta check the ignition timing tomorrow with a timing light and she should be fine. :)

Thanks for your help!
