Post by steptoe » Sat Apr 04, 2009 1:26 pm

Someone was asking about Valeo brand clutch saying never heard of it and was it any good.Well mate just pulled a clutch and dual mass flywheel out of a 2001 Outback and the flywheel - guess it is the original - is Valeo brand cast into it

Yeah that clutch is going in my Liberty next week, paid $280 for it and from what I heard they're OEM in Volvos, SAAB in some Subarus, and couple of European made cars. So from what I've heard they're good...

ok, I didn't realise I already had valeo clutch in my Liberty when I replaced it - now I can confirm that the clutch does it job, I don't know how many kms it lasted, i've done 75,000 kms since I bought my Liberty (3rd owner) and previous owner did 60,000kms and didnt replace the clutch so I dunno how long it has been in it, so I suspect it has done more than 140,000kms...

How long does clutch normally last?

Likely to be the original - was it a dual mass flywheel or just a normal?
Clutch life is gonna depend on how it is treated. I knew an old guy who for twenty years his hearing seamed to be good when talking to him but when it came to taking off from standstill he'd murder his clutch every bloody time and would only get 50k km or so between them. He drove that way until just before he left this place aged 90 1/2 :)

Normal Flywheel... I had a lot of trouble separating the gearbox from the engine, the pins between engine/transmission was like... wedged locked... took me about half hour to get it apart and from what I noticed it mightn't been original or has been replaced, spigot bearing was Japanese but couldn't tell as it was badly worn out.. I think it read as NICHI? or something... so was the throwout bearing, it was on its way out as well had metal dust coming out from it and it was a rattler. I dunno and will never know, but main thing is it has been replaced.

(you reminded me that my great uncle is 93 and his wife is 92 and still driving his 1976 Mazda & 92 Ford Laser and both are manual and regularly drives from Geelong to Lorne every now again...

Cheers

Young Michael drove Canbera to Cairns at the age of 80 and still did trips to Melbourne shortly before his 90th in his MS55 Crown 1968 model? I put it down to the shots he got as a youngster in the British navy or in his job with a s i (shhh....) Oh!

Yeah, you can forget about replacing your clutch again for a while then.

valeo do a lot of stuff for european cars, common brand on peugeots. wouldn't have any dramas using it, they seem to be pretty good quality.
