knock from somewhere....

Post by shuffbag » Mon Mar 23, 2009 8:00 pm

befor the sun comes up and i have the car on stands, anyone like to guess as to my mystery knock is??

you can feel it through the floor in the pasanger footwell mostly (so i've been told, i don't sit there) the knock only appears when taking off normally and turning. i reverse out of a driveway, slight turn, touch the brakes and then KNOCK!

engine mounts are still intact, so are the gearbox mounts (i think. can someone tell me, are there only two rubber blocks joined to either side of the gearbox mount?)

oh and it seemed to miss 3rd on first go driving home, reclutch and in it goes! arrgggghhhhhhh.
and it did it to me just then driving home down gearing, i thought i selected 3rd but nope i was in N. could the gearbox be moving on its mount to much (side to side or something)?

Could be loose lift block bolt one one of the 3 points where the radius rod plate bolts to the floor pan. Problems around that area are common to feel with the passenger's feet. Check the radius rod bushes too.

Might wanna check your brake caliper?!

I've got a random knock that only happens when turning or on a 'gentle' bump when turning - not as you turn the steering wheel but as you hold it in a turn. Haven't heard it in a while but have replaced my front bearings and shafts...

To feel it through the floor points to the radius rod or something with the bracket that holds the radius rod...

If the gearbox bushes are worn appearntly you feel it when you change from Park to Drive or Reverse etc.

Cheers

ROFL! you can forget about popping out of 3rd, forget i even typed it :)

and it appears lift blocks.
i put the front on stands and try'd twisting the blocks on the pasanger side, one moved so i tighten them all up... all good

move to the drivers side, the bolt that goes through the bracket and gearbox crossmember loose! go to tighten it up and it chews the thread out of the nut. resulting in drilling/tapping/$30 bolt!! (i have had to do this on my wagon before but other side)

then i go to tighten the other two one is sweet, but then BANG the other chews out the thread on the nut. aarrrgggghhhhhhhhh now i am waiting on my hired help to get back with another $30 bolt to get rid of my knock once and for all.

knock is gone, i only have smaller knocks now but i'm putting them down to the rod bushes as there was a fair amount of movement in them (whilst reversing and braking).

and one other knock is the cat on the radius rod bracket but thats no biggy.
