Q's about MY gearbox's and the EA81DC

Post by Phizinza » Sun Feb 26, 2006 3:27 pm

So, does anyone know what made a EA81 MY have a 3.9 or 3.7. I have a 89 Brumby with a 3.7, also have 2 wagons (82 and 83) with 3.7's. But I've heard someone had a 3.9 in a 82' wagon and someone else had a 84 with a 3.9... So, anyone? I would like to understand what cars might have what stuff.
I also saw (and getting) a full wreck of a 89 touring wagon, and guess what... It has a 3.7 rear diff.. So, wtf? I will check what my dad's 85 touring wagon has when he gets home...

Also, What model did the EA81 dual carb motor come out of?

Any answers? Thanks.

I would think that these were all optioned and that it is just the luck of the draw if you happen to get the 3.90 differential.

Mike, were you the one with the 84 or the 82 wagon? Was it a touring wagon? A normal wagon, or a sports wagon? If no one can answer the question I will have to investigate and see if there is a straight answer.
Mudrat, was your 84 a sport/touring? Oh, and whats the difference to a wagon that says sports to a wagon that is just a wagon?
:D
Any idea on the motor?

Mine was just a DL mate.

The MY I still have now is a 1981 model by the plate, so it would be and 1982 model when sold here in this country. Its a 3.7 ratio

The '89 L Tourer I have just got, is also a 3.7

My '83 DL was 3.7 I had a 3.9 box and diff out of an '85 DL now I'm back to 3.7 with and RX box.

My '84 auto tourer is 3.7 but I think all auto's were 3.7 weren't they?

I just bought a set of '86 Factory manuals second hand.
Specs inside for L's are 3.9 for DL, 3.7 for RX, and 3.545 for auto.
Now later models do differ, and seem to be 3.7 for manual and auto, but that I cant confirm in this publication.

I had 3.7 in my 84 Brumby and now it is still 3.7 out of a 91 DL. I have loooked at lots of DLs and find lots have 3.7, some 3.9 and its not the later ones that had 3.9. Not a pattern I could pick. Think the difference is really so minimal shouldn't matter unless you have one of each in the one car !

I wanted 3.9 to get the supposed different ratios in their boxes but found the 3.7 box had the different ratios I wanted despite what some records suggested.

since we are comparing ratios - what would the 'seat of pants ' feel be with a 4.11 vs a 3.70. ( still contemplating this.) assume a ej16 is in front of it.
