B4 Attempt number 2 **pics**

Post by vidler » Thu Dec 04, 2008 5:53 pm

well im onto my 2nd attempt at fixing my b4, with the half cut available for to pick up on saturday, i dedicated this break back in perth to fix the B4. below is a photo of how it was yesterday, following that is what ive done today. all going to plan so far and instead of only putting in one corner like last time, im putting the whole front, in theory it will be easier to keep square and look factory with no visible welds anywhere. ill keep you posted coz ill be at it till monday. Aiming to get the half cut unpicked and grafted on on saturday/sunday, then test fit all panels and headlights and weld it up on monday. then just have to paint and reseal joints with sikaflex and start bolting back together

and now.....

Did you actually cut it out and will weld back together? What is your plans for it?

not quite sure what u mean by that, but i have unpicked everything and pulled out both chassis rails as u see in the pics, im getting a bare half cut on saturday that ill be unpicking the same way, then putting the front/rails from the half cut onto the car. you'll see what i mean coz the half cut is burgundy so it'll stand out from the white till i paint it.

planning on keeping it till we decide if we need 2 cars.... im in favour of keeping it, the mrs isnt, but im working on her too:)

wow looking good Jay, you work fast! (I mean, in bursts of course). Let me know who wins the argument... I've always wanted a B4! In my case you'd have the option of quitting it early, ie just completing the welding job and leaving me to re-assemble everything and paint :)

Looking alright so far. I have helped a mate of mine do a few front end repairs like this, and he has a bit of a trick to make it look factory. When you do your spot welds, have a panel hammer close by and while the weld is stil red hot give it a tap flat with the hammer. Most cases you cant pick a thing.

i think there is only going to be about 6 visible spot welds, the rest ill be doing from inside the wheel arches which will get covered in rust proofing goo. doing it with my tig welder so will be nice and neat anyway, but ill keep that in mind for sure

I believe BrennyV's shop does spray painting. You could also try contacting Shark on the forum, his brother is a spray painter and they recently did Shark's (ex-Seagull's) Lib.

ncie, very good effort! It might be an idea to leave that engine crossmember bolted in position to keep it extra square, not sure if that's your plan already tho.

*edit - hey you might be lucky, maybe BOC gas is open Sundays, lots of places are at the moment!

Yeah but what I meant how come you're cutting it off and replace - has the front end been in a smash or something? that what I dont get...
