You don't really need to know what each wire is. This is basically what I did:
1. strip off all the conduit, tape etc so you can see everything, and trace all wires coming out of the ecu plugs - any that aren't going to engine plugs, ignitor, AFM or EGO sensors can be cut off (i left a generous length of each, just in case it turns out they are required).
2. splice into each of the black wires and ground them
3. whack a battery positive and ign positive onto the main relay (the diagram in my photobucket exactly matched the wiring for my MY96 EJ18 )
4. add an ignition positive to the coil pack. this is the step i missed and took it to a sparky to fix.
If you do find good wiring diagrams, post em up here. There's a Subaru FSM for these early Imprezas floating around the net and ebay, but it's a dodgy scan and most of the electrical section is unreadable. I've also got a CD with service info for lots of different makes, but it's all about American market vehicles which are quite different to ours, hence the need to work it out myself.
Or of course you could talk to your friendly local Subarino
.

yeh i tend not to want to have to use subarino, hes done me many a favour and i have not been able to return them yet, and i havnt enough money to pay somebody to cut it down so looks like i might have to do it like that....strip it all donw to bare wires and trace each and every wire . and if i still get stuck...ill crawl up to subarinos feet and beg him to help...again

Dave i already told u... i will do it for you for nothing... you will just owe me one... maybe when i come to lift the forester i will ask for a hand. But it willmake it tons harder for me if you attempt it on your own and then give up. I need to work on it as it is now.

EJ conversion wiring harness cut downs available. Please PM or email ([email protected]) for details.
Assuming it's from an Impreza, the Ej18 is the same as EJ16 in the 93-6 models but they change in 96-7. If yours uses an airflow meter it is the early type.
Should be a 2 plug hitachi ecu so will not be any in the above link.
Early EJ18 single point engine from a Legacy will be similiar to the EJ22 pinout.
If Subarino has done a few then he will probably be able to do it without a diagram apart from perhaps finding the fan and check engine light wires. It's a pretty simple setup.

EJ18 / EJ16 Wiring diagram.
http://www.suberdave.com/USMB/95_Impreza_18l_wiring.pdf
This has the online wiring diagram for ej18.
I have EJ16 engine too that I am putting in my VW Ghia. Fairly straight forward I guess as detailed above.
Are the mounting holes to the gearbox the same on EJ16 and EJ18? I know the bores are the same so guess the block is the same just different stroke lengths of the rods and pistons.

This fella is sharp, has a very good reputation with a couple engine shops I have dealt with. He translated the wiring info that covers my EJ20G, and Ive decided its going in the RX, importers are hunting ecu and harness from Japan, unless I can get my hands on a Brat ( id trade the rx in a heartbeat )
