Diff oil leak

Post by rapide » Fri Nov 07, 2008 2:19 pm

I have a leak of diff oil coming from the retaining ring which holds the diff carrier bearings. On removing the lock which holds the screw-in retainer rings I can srew the retainer ring in.Should I tighten this ring? What kind of seal is on the inside of this retainer? There are no details in the gregory's manual.Any advice much appreciated. Thanks Jim

if your talking about on the gearbox its just an o ring seal probley the back diff too not sure though

and screwing them in/out changes the backlash on the diff and if not right will wear out the pinion/crownwheel

Easy way

The easiest way to do it is to mark where they tabs are now, count the turns as you unscrew it, replace the "O" ring and put it back where it was.
The genuine instructions require a lot more work, but do not allow for other wear in the geabox, so the safest way is to put it back where it was.
