4500rpm rev limiter?

Hi all, I've just bought an unrego'd Liberty 3.0R with the EZ30R and when giving it a decent blast of revs in neutral to see what it sounded like, to my surprise it hit the rev limiter at a lowly 4500 rpm and wouldn't rev any higher.

Now as it's not rego'd I can't drive it yet, but I happened to notice a post on a different forum where I guy was saying his 3.0 Outback had a 4500rpm rev limiter when in neutral.

Mine revs smoothly from idle to 4500 in neutral, then hits the limiter, but no flashing dash lights etc. As soon as it drops under 4500 rpm again it's smooth as.

Is this neutral rev limiter thing for real, or do I have a fault?

I've never known a car to vary the rev limiter between driving and neutral, so any thoughts will be a big a help.

Cheers.

M

G’day M,

That sounds like something Subaru would do. I’m not 100% sure though. Any details in the owner’s manual?

You’ll find out once you get it ready for rego and are able to drive it on the road. I know that doesn’t fill you with confidence.

Cheers

Hey Bennie,

Bit if a mystery this. Yes I'm going to search through the handbook. Someone else mentioned it sounds a bit like limp mode which is concerning, but there's no cel lights.

It does have a blown brake light and someone suggested that could put it in to limp mode. Sounds far fetched, but who knows?

I'll change the globe and see but honestly I'd be very surprised if that sorts it out.

If it is a factory setting while in neutral I would've thought others would be aware of this. Puzzling eh.

Cheers. M

I've got a Gen 4 lib, 2.5l N/A and not long after I bought it, it would go into limp mode and retard the ignition timing, only give me 1/3rd throttle. 2 days at a Subaru specialist shop and they eventually found it was due to the LED brake lights the previous owner had fitted, they put them back to standard incandescents and it fixed the problem. So it may not be as far fetched as you think! ;)
