EA 81 Broken power steering rack

Gday , everyone

After putting in my power steering into my 92 Brumby. I got ready to go. Buttoned it all up, double checked all the hoses and bolts were tight and filled her up with new power steering fluid. Turn the car on. The pump is spinning and not making a fuss like the old one. But then I checked under the car. Horror! A massive puddle of my power steering fluid was leaking from the bottoms of the rack.

After turning the car off I inspected the underside of the rack and suspected it might be leaking from one of the hard lines running across it. But I can’t tell because I haven’t pulled it out yet.

I would like to know if refurbishing the rack is possible on my own or will I need to send it away to someone (Preferably in Victoria or South Australia because that’s closest) to do it for me?

I will also update when I get the rack out of the ute

Thanks, MOAM

I’ve gotten the rack out

I still think the leak is around the lines but it’s still hard to tell

G’day MOAM,

I’m sure you could DIY a rebuild. Hardest part would be sourcing all the seals.

I believe there is a mob over here somewhere that refurbs these racks with good results.

If you find a kit or the individual seals that work in this refurb I’ll be keen to get a set as my rack is leaking and it’s a point of “bad” now

Cheers

Bennie

I can recommend https://www.activepowersteering.com.au (based in Sydney) if you can't find anyone closer.

Seal kits are available, but if the rack shaft is worn it will need to be re-conditioned / replaced.

If you're still looking for a solution, Re-car here in Adelaide rebuilt my wagons P/S rack to a very high standard. Works great and hasn't leaked a drop in 30,000k's or more. Keep your P/S mounting rubber though, the one with the little hole for the 6mm clear plastic hose, they couldn't find an equivalent new one.
