Timing belt 2013 WRX

Post by Subby_2000 » Fri Nov 20, 2020 6:46 pm

Hi all,

Need some advice. I have a WRX 2013 with 102,000km on the clock. Subaru have advised I should change the timing belt at 125,000km. I am a bit hesitant in waiting that long as I have also read it’s a good idea to replace the timing belt at around the 100k mark. Any thoughts?

Also, should I be replacing the entire kit ie water pump etc?
What should I be expecting to pay? Ball park.

Any advice is appreciated.

G’day Subby,

Are you looking to DIY or pay a shop to do the work for you?

DIY would cost a day’s efforts for your first time and whatever parts set you back. Buy quality parts (genuine where possible)!

As for water pump, you’re in that area so it’s a good time to do it as preventative maintenance. This will mean a coolant change and will allow you to pull out the radiator for more working space in front of the engine to do the timing belt kit. Replace all the idler pulleys too, the bearings in these are what usually fails on an EJ engine that hasn’t had its whole timing belt kit replaced.

As for the 125,000km, that’s more inline with the 100,000 mile mark from the US market. It’ll do it but if you want to err on the side of caution that’s up to you and probably not a bad idea. Timing belt kit is much cheaper than a replacement engine.

Ball park figure. That’s a good question as I don’t take my vehicle to a mechanic. Mine is all driveway work on weekends as needed. So parts are the only cost with my time.

Cheers

Bennie

Thanks Bennie,

Always so helpful mate. I am definitely not confident in doing it myself. I think I will leave it to the pros to be safe.

I don’t really have a regular mechanic at the moment as my previous car had dealer cap priced servicing.

Anyone know of an honest/decent mechanic in the Sydney area, please shoot me a PM.
