Bantum, has your 3D scanning or design software got a function to give you a mirror image of what you produce?

Ah sorry yep got one of them end clips ( among several other bits on the drawing board ) was referring to the fuel pull lever, never seen one for a Brumby ...

Add : yes you can mirror / reflect & do all manner of things with sketchup - save as .stl file and check for continutiy ( basically means that all faces of object are pointing out, and no holes ) with a program called netfabb. Yet to sort out software for the scanner.

Keep adding more as get them sorted ... ��

I don't think that's correct. The tailgate trim end caps are a thinner material than the end caps of the side/corner pieces from memory. I could be wrong though, my side/end caps have been missing for awhile...

Sorry Steptoe is on the money : 2 lefty & 2 righty ( still working on them )

Another issue has arisen though, that of copyright.

- Who owns the original ? +Do they still have ownership ?
- What happens ( legally wise ) when I go copying stuff ?
- Can I claim copyleft ? ( if you know what that means )
- What protection do I have from claims against the copy ?

Just a few of them I've come across recently, so not sure how to proceed yet ...

Got any suggestions ?

Get in touch with Subaru and find out about reproduction parts for older cars and what are the legal obligations.

Was going to say that it mostly relates to commercial use where you make moneys from it, doesn't say squat about free enterprises where you give away stuff with no copyrights ... ��

So it's a bit of a grey area as far as the law is concerned, it still hasent caught up with the reality of current situation im afraid ... ��

Having given up on the idea of flank badges to read BRUMBY instead of SUBARU being made on a CNC by a signwriter that I no longer acknowledge is alive (think it is mutual ) am discussing idea again with another sign manufacturer who has similar standing with same dude mentioned above. May just get about to having aluminium ones made and may work a deal for a number of 'em They might just be more durable and accessable than 3D printed ones.

I had similar ideas of getting ally ones or similar machined up, all the work is in the designing on the computer though, or cost in paying someone else to design it. I did plenty of 3d CAD at my old job with a really nice (err $20k) program, was a joy to use. Left that behind 6 months ago, have solidworks on my home pc and I absolutely hate it Can't get anything useful out of it.

Looks like Bantum has the 3d models pretty down pat, what formats can sketchup export in? Just a matter of e-mailing a file to someone who does custom CNC stuff, if its the right format

Yeah - From Sketchup you can export pretty much any file format you want …

If you contact the machine shop & let me know what type of file the machineist needs, then I can upload it ….

Add : The other way to do it would be to get the 'pug' printed in either wax or plastic, then make a sand mould to cast it in aluminium ... ��

Yep Steptoe - if you do want to go to the trouble of getting some 'Brumby' badges made up, don't let me stop you. ( I might get pair myself ) Just haven't had the time or finances to do it.

Just remember it's been released on a 'creative commons' licence, so you will need to acknowledge where you got it from & is to be used for personal use only. ( Its not like there's thousands to be made from them ) Same goes for all the other parts that I've uploaded ...

Bit of a stuff up with the settings, so will have to print it again...

L series door handle surrounds might be nice. The plastic goes bad after being in the sun too long.
Power window surrounds also go brittle where the screws from behind break.

Might have some spares I can donate for the good of all if you need samples to measure off.

OK, went to thingverse,com on the BRUMBY flank badge hit the doonlood button and got some file 274 kb - that is a bit small, this ain't a file that can be err, sent to a factory in China to reproduce eh ? A mate is working on it, asking me how many, one or two - shipping containers full !

Looks like we are gonna start this from basics, pull badge off, measure its dimensions, take pics, change letters to read BRUMBY instead, and choose a decent plastic ....

No, the objects are not that complicated so the .stl files aren't that big really ...

Probably not what is intended by the licence - if you want to go that route you'll have to negotiate copyrights with Subaru ...

Yeah - Like I said, if you want to deal with all the hassles associated with commercialising the stuff, most welcome to try ... Do send me a few samples when you're done ...

P.S. - Do note that some of the objects that I've drawn up may not be accurate, as it was mostly done by tracing photos etc. so definitely has a bit of fudge factor in it ...

Only if you're not using the supplied file, doesn't matter how you apply it ...

Yes it was the intent that you can go to local printer ( or even better if you have your own printer ) & get it made locally ... Only down side is time taken & quality of print ...

Hope that clarifies things for you, as I don't want to be a downer - but that's the deal with most free stuff nowadays ...

all good Bantum, thanks Can't see how Subaru has anything to do with a BRUMBY badge being made up - they shoulda thought of it before us !

No worries about the waiting for L series stuff.

If you're going to get stuff done in China, I travel here often as I'm married to a woman from Shanghai (and am there at the moment enjoying the smog, how I miss Aus sun, clouds and blue sky...).
If you can get packages made to fit as luggage and <23kg, I can usually bring back 1 box.
Not sure how that will go for the next trip next year though as there'll be a very small person in tow which might eat into our allowance.
