Thanks guys.
Yes EA81 did come with aircon and power steering.
Enough of the 5 speed for now. When the times right. ( and the money )
I'm turning my attention to these threads on the block.
We were more thinking about retapping them to a bigger size, which means new studs, again .
Didn't even cross our minds about heli coils.
Cheers Cam

Ok thanks.
I think there m10.
No idea if you can get bigger studs or not.
Would a heli coil be strong enough?
First of all I will ring my engine builder and see what he says.
Cheers Cam

Nope , some will swear black and blue there is no such thing as M11 but there is and these are it. A helicoil is strong enough if not stronger, made of stainless I think. Lasted me 180,000km , outlasted the rest of the over revved little racer YES Virginia (ask yer dad) you can wreck an EA81 other than by cooking one. Mine developed a ripper of a knock and the mains bearing in the midle started to reshape the blocks bearing journals , still never let me down though

Good news!!!
I rang tony knight this morning.
He said he had already heli coiled them.
So that means all I have to do is take it back down and he will re helicoil them.
Should be sweet!
Steptoe, my god you did what?
Technically you didn't kill it then did you if it kept running.
Ok it's m11, so my square lied to me.
Cheers Cam

Of course there's an M11, there's everything from M1 up to...some very big threads
Good to hear you can get it sorted, I guess this might have pushed back your plans for this week a bit?

Yes yet again plans pushed back.
Originally I had planned for it to be done by my 16th in February.
Then we relised that there was more serious work other than a hg.
Then I thought before I go overseas.
Then before the end of school holidays, this week.
Now I don't know. When it'll get done. Life is just so hectic.
Cheers Cam

Update
She's just about done, just a few things to tidy up before we drop her in.
To do that weird positioned nut behind the rocker gear we took the rocket gear off after each torque stage and then put it back on. We hope it will still seal and it should as I read in the fsm that you are ment to take the rocker off to adjust the tappats.
A few pics.

1. how old is the water pump?
2 Do you really want to destroy all that work for the sake of a 70 dollar part?
Am I getting my wires crossed with Silverbullet's "twin port" EA81s or were you only doing the stock EA81 head gasket? Or was it a complete rebuild? My head's fried
Looking good mate!
Cheers

Yep looking great Cam, you'll probably have yours running before mine, hehe Curious about taking the rocker gear off after each torque step though, taking the gear off to adjust tappets?

Yeah complete full rebuild with porting etc.
No idea how old it is but it looks pretty good inside and Daniel said it was alright so yeah...
Il think about it.
Yes a drag race will be scheduled once both cars are running.
But not an illegal one...

Yeah we didn't have steptoes funny tool for that one head nut.Silverbullet wrote: Yep looking great Cam, you'll probably have yours running before mine, hehe Curious about taking the rocker gear off after each torque step though, taking the gear off to adjust tappets?
We were slightly worried untill I read that when you adjust tappats you are supposed or can remove the rocker gear.
So let's hope I have some compression.

Well I haven't heard that one before, I know you can take the rocker gear and 2 bolts out safely without effecting the seal once it's been established though. Shouldn't effect it much anyway I wouldn't think?

Yeah that's what I'm talking about Sam. The gear and the two bolts.
I just hope my seal has been formed and secured.

Hmm yeah that's what's thought. I would have thought it would break your gasket seal.El_Freddo wrote:I've never heard of removing the rocker gear to adjust it! Seems a bit backwards to me!

For some reason this reminds me of Dad telling me he had to pull all the rocker gear out of the MY when it was only 5 years old, the day after it was serviced by dealer, a day before he needed it for work; the dealer had taken all the gear out for some reason and put it back upside down i.e. the pushrod side on the valves and valve side on the pushrods...apparently it made a hell of a racket

I think you'll be right only because of what my dad said when he replaced 3 threads after torquing them up and they pulled. He used the same gasket each time another one pulled. It's now on another engine we ended up building for the job and is going well so far. His theory is that when the engine is in operation it's the heat that effects the headgasket seal, break the torque and you could break this seal too.Brumby Kid wrote:Well we will see what happens when I turn the key.
We'll see how long this engine of ours holds up
