carbed ej18 into my carbed l series

Post by yobhgareb » Wed Jan 15, 2014 8:21 am

I have a 1986 l series 4wd dr wagon which has ea82 carb engine:-D. Today I was talking to the owner of an old subaru dealership, and he tells me he has an ej18 carbed engine and fwd gearbox he took from a legacy with 42k miles on it which he will sell handily enough.
Now, my ea82 is running good enough, but ive been itching to ej the ĺ series since I got it. I know there are more powerful engines I could go for , with fuel injection, but this being my first engine swap, I want a handy one without the wiring to deal with.
I have a few questions I need some help with. First off, would I be able to use the front casing of the fwd ej tranny on my ea82 dual range box? and also , is there any issues to watch for in this carb for carb swap?

Some casings differ - 4WD EA series boxes have a bolt on "appendage" that the input shaft lives in. FWD EA boxes casings don't have a bolt on thing rather integral cast as part of the casing. AWD EA box ala Vortex XT being single range also have this.
I have pulled a Foz EJ AWD DR box apart and cannot recall what it was in the thing area.

Don't break the dizzy cap - could be very tricky to find another !

You will need an EJ dual range casing to get the "L" series dual range stuff to fit so you may as well use an EJ dual range box or an adaptor plate + your 5 speed "L" box.

Pictures please :)

My thinking on the gearbox is to use an ej front casing, as the ej18 carb comes with flywheel and good low milage subaru clutch. I hadnt thought of using an ej box altogether, I thought they were longer or shorter than ea82 trans?

You can use the EJ gearbox's front casing to shove the L series internals into - BUT: If you have a dual range L series gearbox you'll need to source a dual range EJ gearbox for the front cases - if not things will not work as they should.

The EJ gearbox is a different length to the EA gearbox, but this is ONLY in the rear housing - the front cases are the same in dimensions with exception to the bell housing area.

I've fitted a dual range L series (EA) gearbox into a set of dual range EJ gearbox front casings. It's all plug and play.

And I'm sure with that EJ18 with the carb setup you'd be able to use an EJ22 block if you ever felt the need. The carb might need a retune/jets changed but it should be doable.

I too am keen for LOADS of pics - Dizzy, Carb & manifold mainly. For the dizzy I think we're all keen to see the mounting plate etc.

Cheers

An EJ box is longer, tailshaft needs a bit cut out of it, if you are careful, its simple.
L serious, still.

Ah the mythical carbied EJ very nice :)

I would love the manifold, carby(+air cleaner) dizzy and coil from the other motor, but I would say the dealer would only part with the whole lot.

He has a gen 1 legacy with ej20 na non interference injection engine there also, I would love to have had the van full of engines coming down the road ! but what do you tell wifey in that case?
Its quite a spin to the dealers, but I will keep you in mind if I see another about on my travels. you never know what would turn up.

This is an mr2 1.8 vvti radiator on ebay. I think it could be good for my conversion. Its 700mm long and 350mm deep. It needs a filler neck and cap fitted, which wouldn't be too difficult by a good radiator shop. What you guys think?

looks like it would do the job but you would probably be better going for the XT6 radiator or the BRZ radiator.

Sorry about the bad pics . I had spare time this evening and got the fwd gearbox of the engine . Im having fun trying to get a dual range ej gearbox to swap casings with my ea82 item, and this is tempting me to just use a single range awd transmission from a 1.6 impreza that I can get. Im not sure if it would be as strong as other n.a single range ej transmissions from the larger displacement cars, but its close to hand and available.
I think ive come across a good radiator for the swap on ebay uk. Its for an early renault 5 gt turbo. The core is 535mm x 288mm x 50mm. Overall sive is 631mm x 295mm x 62mm. The radiator cap is on the opposite side, but it has a nipple on the correct side to pick up the pipe for the bottle in the l series.

if the nipple comes out of the radiator core you cannot use it for the overflow bottle, as the pipe will have constant radiator pressure water in it not overflow / return pressure.

How much is the renault 5 gt turbo radiator as opposed to he BRZ or XT6 radiator?

I was talking about the brz and Renault 5 turbo rads there Toonga. I wouldn't get an xt6 one here, it would have to be imported.

Not a problem, I know the BRZ radiator doesn't have a filler neck on it (if I could get one with a filler neck I would put it in my vortex)

people have suggested one of these things to use with the BRZ radiator.

http://www.ebay.com/bhp/radiator-hose-filler

The Renault 5 turbo radiator looks like it would be your best option with minimal modifications to get it to work. (what year is it out of ?)

incidentaly I started a thread in August of last year about the BRZ swap

showthread.php?t=23993

funnily enough if didn't get much airplay :)

The radiator is listed for 1981-1986 Renault 5 turbo. Another option I see is the saab 900 turbo 1978-1985. It has 595mm x 320mm x 40mm core and looks like it could work with an inline filler. The top water pipe is down the core a few cm, which could cause problems getting the radiator completely filled. I can by it for £49 , but the remote filler is putting me off.
