It was a bit cheaper than that. Use some nice mats to reduce wear.

Keep your factory floor liner under it or add some underlay to help with sound deadening, works a treat and adds a bit of luxury to your ute ;)

Had a bit more time to mess around:

Well, the air con still works well, so I'm good there with no leaks: Winner.

I've got genuine front bush's coming. Really prefer rubber than plastic.

Got a new windscreen rubber here, and the carpet and underlay have also arrived.

Got a new engine stay/support bush set (the one to the spare tyre well) coming also.

Not sure when I'll tackle this rust issue, but now for the question:

It's an 89 red targa: Even subaru can't tell me the colour code: It's either
946 Rio red
or
726 Splendor red

Anyone know?

Can you find the colour code sticker under the bonnet? It’s usually somewhere on the edge of the engine bay or on top of the upper radiator support panel.

I’ll have to go check mine and compare notes - it’s a red targa.

I recently saw a new XV with the red I want to respray my brumby in - but need to get it “good” in the body department first! And find time to strip it out and go through all the proper respray work to get it right (and awesome) the first time round.

I did manage to find a badly faded paint code sticker in the end! IIRC it was Rio Red.

Anyways, decided I need 5 forward cogs... Got a box out of a 1991 L, code TW75F9K2BW. I grabbed the rear diff just in case I need that if the ratio's different between my 89 brumby box. I grabbed all the console, the prop shaft, the shifters, clutch cable/pedal and the clutch disc. I 'hope' the cv splines are the same as the brumby, it was a carby EA82, and AFAIK that means the CV's should be the same.

But I really need to tackle that windscreen rust first before winter hits the poor thing again.

Hey SubySpanner, nice to see the Red Targa is still getting some love. did see you other thread about L series 5 speed, I have a extra box here but sorry no detailed info on them. The diff you took out should have a ratio tag on the back of it... it will be either 3.7 or 3.9 as far as I know. Std Brumby is 3.7 from my experience.

The box is a bit oily, and it stinks, so I want to pull it down and give the once over. Anyone know of any pdf's on stripping the 5 speed?

Front cases are the same as EJ gear, as are the torque specs for the rear cases.

You need to remove the 4wd engagement/selector gear at the back of the box to proceed forwards - it’s a bit of a mind puzzle with the decent balls and “pills” to get it all out and back in. EJ boxes are much easier to work on due to NOT having this mechanism!

All seals are the same across the range of manual boxes, with exception to the rear plate and the 4wd lever seals which are different to EJ stuff.

Hey Suby Spanner,

I think it comes down to what manual they’ve uploaded. I got a Gen3 manual (pretty sure it was from that site) that was difficult to use, until I worked out that it was flooded with imbedded hyperlinks to the specific information being discussed in other sections. No need to flick pages or guess how far down the slide bar you needed to be ;)

I've got a Dual Range ej 5speed and rear diff, with 3.9 diff ratios. Thing is, I've found another 5 speed with the 3.9 ratio, but the rear diff is already gone: Does anyone know if any of the auto's or single range 5speed Subaru's have 3.9's so I can grab a matching diff for it?

Restoring/building this 89 Targa is sort of on hold, I'm patching up a cream one first: I bought two 'parts' brumbies many years ago: but it turns out, this cream one will scrub up ok! I've got some lower 'A" pillar rust repairs to do, I've pull the windscreen out, and blow me down: The windscreen channels are fantastic: The drivers side isn't even rusty. But the drain holes are blocked, and I suspect this has cause the A pillar rust issues: I'm guessing I'm going to need to pull the dash to patch the firewall properly? Anyone got a link to a walk through for dash removal? Most of the links are dead since the host move sadly.

And finally: It appears the original vinyl flooring shrinks: Has anyone ever bothered reusing/stretching it some how? Or we all just jumping to carpet these days?

Subi Spanner, the auto L series were all 3.9 diff ratio and I believe many of the early Imprezas were 3.9 ratio too.

Good news about that beige brumby! I’ve not heard of rusting out at the base of the A pillar without a hole in the corner above it but I guess anything is possible.

Vinyl floor - live with it or convert to carpet. My L series floor has the worst shrinkage that I’ve seen. My brumby is ok and seems to have faired well.

Yes, interesting about the rust: Surprising how bad the a pillars are. Oh well, it's well worth saving, it's the best EA81 I've owned too!
