Custom Bullbar?

Post by ajames » Wed Apr 24, 2013 10:37 pm

Has anyone done a custom bullbar for a L series? I had a look but can't find anything like what I'm trying for (i.e. more a replacement bumper than a 'round the headlights' effort) - Anyone got pics?.

You mean you're after something like this or a nudge bar setup?

If you're after a nudge bar you can unbolt the side loops on mine. Others are a one piece. These can be had from ebay for $50. I wouldn't pay any more than that - but make sure you get the bits under the bumper that bring it all together, otherwise you won't be able to attach it to your bumper unless you've already got the framework there.

Cheers

He's one I brought off AndrewT a few years ago. I would have like the centre bar posts to be a bit wider but this was fine for the price. I got one made for my orginal L.Series Touring Wagon back in 1990 and it was around $700 back then.. god knows what they would cost today??

Another question, is 'thick wall' (not sure on exact thickness yet) 50mm galv cyclone fence pole ($15 per length) likely to be strong enough for bar work (front, rear and sliders)?

Ah, you're after a custom tube bar...

IMO I wouldn't go overboard on thickness with the front bar, you want it to remain light yet still bend in an impact so that the body doesn't absorb the impact. Let the bar do that!

My bar in the pic above has had a wallaby strike at 110km/h on the left hand side, that bent right back without hitting the headlight, the wallaby went under the vehicle - hairy! I didn't have lift then either.

The bar was straightened out and the valance panelling the same as best as I could. Other than that all were ok.

I know it's on a Brumby but the principle's the same. Also not tube, but solid as.

That's pretty much the front bar sorted, now I'm also interested in a similar rear bar and rock sliders... has anyone done that kind of bar work?

Haha so true... I found a piece of pre-bent tube that I was going to cut up and use for a muffler replacement section then I lined it up at the back and thought to myself it could work well as a rear bar with a bit of work... time to get creative with the grinder!
