My RS Wagon went into the shed to fix the gear shift .......

Post by niterida » Fri Feb 01, 2013 9:43 pm

Well I bought my RS wagon with the intention of keeping it completely standard.

So today I drove it into the shed to fix the loose sloppy gear shift and there sitting in a corner was my 4.44 DCCD box that was destined for the Brumby. But I figured the Brumby is years away from being finished so it would be a waste just to let a good box stay there wasting away.

And then I thought well if the box is going in that means I have to use my plated 1.5 way diff too, and the standard exhaust has to come off to swap the boxes, So I may as well replace it with my 3" system while I am there. And of course a 3" system needs a good turbo to make the most of it so I figured I should pop my TD05-20G on it too.

hmmm a TD05-20G might be a b it big for a standard RS - I know - I will put my mandrel bent headers on to get it breathing a bit better. Might still be a bit laggy though ??
Simple solution - rebuild my EJ22 with my spare RS heads and STi conrods (and maybe a set of Wiseco pistons - simeon are you reading this ??)

But then it will go OK but look like a pile of crap. Can't have that so I will have to paint my 3 piece ROH 18's in matching Dark Grey Metallic and fit them on.

Now the brakes look a bit weedy and its sitting like a 4WD - luckily I have a spare set of 4 pots and 294mm rotors and a set of height adjustable coilovers to slam it to the ground.

I knew there was a reason I bought all that good gear for the Brumby :)

Yeah I'll get some pics tomorrow - shed actually looks really good with the Brumby shell, the RS up on 4 axle stands and the hatchback Torana sitting in the corner :)

Well I've decided that it will still look stock under the hood at least - so it will still be running the WAIC and of course the RS heads. SHould go like a cut snake with the extra low down grunt of the 2.2 and the super low 4.44 gearbox......................

GOLD.

Should make for an interesting combo. But of course, if you only fixed what was needed and ignored the rest of the bit you've got then you'd have a stock runner. I guess it's all reversible without the remnants of front intercooler holes etc.

Cheers

Its all just bolt on bits - it will look completely standard under the bonnet and in the cabin (except the head unit). It will only be underneath that will give the game away.

OK photos as requested :

Into the garage, up on jacks and wheels off :

Engine and box out through the bottom :

Except the front of the car isn't quite high enough for it to roll out. Will try and drop the rear a bit more or split the motor and box and take the motor out sideways through the wheel arch.
This was a much easier way when I was doing it on my own - otherwise I may have ended up with a gear box on my head

Stereo install happening at the same time :

hahaha yeah its a 8m extension cable with 6 power points - 1 every 2m. Makes it sooooo much better - cable hanging down can't be tripped over and 6 power points all around the work area :)

got no interest at all. Its funny because before I advertised it for sale I had at least 6 people asking to buy it from me and even offering more than I advertised it for.

so decided to keep it.

You'd always regret it if you did.

haha yeah huge job.

Nearly back together* after months of deliberating about which bits to put back in.

Its getting a 4.44 WRX box and diff, kings coilovers, 19/20mm sways and maybe (just maybe) 4 pot fronts.

*well the engine and gearbox are back together at least

What's wrong with the stock setup?
