EJ22 in L series sump mods

Post by tambox » Sat Oct 06, 2012 7:03 pm

Has anybody modified or fitted a different sump to an EJ22 when it fitted in an L series, as it hangs down a long way.
I have a few dead EJ22 motors and was thinking about doing some mods to increase the clearance.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've wanted to cut down my sump to increase the clearance under it so the bash plate can sit higher. I also want to angle the front edge for a little be of extra clearance on the approach angle.

I might get there some day, it's not an issue at the moment so I've not bothered, plus it means engine out and down time on the car :(

Getting the oil pick up and the baffling correct would be the tricky bit I reckon.

Cheers

look at the vanagon sites for information on this, as these guys have to cut the sump down for clearance issues.

heres one

Bugger me - that fella LIVES out of his van

No real details, but here's his images I've "borrowed on a permanent basis":

I got stuck reading what he got up to, didn't get to the end as I should be in bed... but he knows his stuff about these vehicles - even imported a an audi (I think) alpine gearbox or something, flipped the diff, made a bell-housing adaptor plate (bell housing to gearbox) to mate up the subaru EJ22... Then suspension stuff started and I phased out on that thread.

I wonder where these sumps could be found - my issue would be oil starvation when on extreme angles left or right...

Cheers

The sump looks great, found out some info about them, they will not fit with Subaru engine mounts, designed to fit VW mounting system.

http://www.rjes.com/html/sumps.html

I have a dead ej22 (need an oil pump Bennie? 360,000km!!), that once I get the EA82 off the engine stand I was going to investigate some custom cutting and welding.

Just looking for Ideas.

How's this going Tambox?

You've been a bit quiet on the forums lately - hopefully this means you've been busy with subaru mods

Not quite Bennie, work kills fun.

I am still very happy with the EJ22 LPG in the L, at this stage I re-shaped the sump gaurd and settled for that.
Have a couple of sumps and have plans to modify one, but still in the "plans" stage.
L serious, still.

Really??

The only reason we're talking about this is for more ground clearance. It's not necessary for a daily runner/road goer. Actually it's not really necessary unless you're trying to gain a little more for potentially a lot of work...

This from someone who spends his life improving his current set ups, hey Steptoe.

Would shallow dry sump suffice?

Maybe, but that would be a lot of work.
Debatable if it would be worth it for what you gain.
But with Tweety pretty well sorted and you are looking for something to do ........

I should look into this again and have something ready for the next time the engine is out. I've got a spare sump on an engine I'm not using at the moment, it shouldn't be hard to dummy it up and go from there.

Anyone know if there's a science to it as I would like to keep a good oil capacity and not have the pump starve while offroading...

Cheers
