Brumby Taigate rebuild

Post by revmax » Fri Apr 06, 2012 4:36 pm

For my trailer.
This one is realy rusty along the bottom and has some dints I had previously thought this one unreparable because of the rust, but I have an idea.

Blast all remaining rust and prime bare metal.

in this same photo you can see the strip I will use to replace the bottom strip.
it is 2mm steel sheet 50mm wide with a bend 25deg 15mm in from one side.
You can just see one end of the strip a knotch I cut in to locate the ends and the bent bit will tuck under the outer sheet.
One side of the gate has had a heap of bog applied so I had to grind this out to get to the metal sheet , not visible but it is on this left side of the gate.

That is exackery where my gate has rust bubbles forming on the outside. I was thinking a piece of checker plate aluminium riveted and trimmed to the edges for a fix up. You do not muck around, get an idea and whoofa it's done

Cut the rust out steptoe and it will never bother you again.

Yer but my ideas come from work mates.
I talk to one bloke who is good at pannels another bloke who is good at painting and another who is good at improvising. Oh an the bloke who knows a bloke with a sheet metal bender.
With all ideas and thoughts I can come up with an easy way to do the job. "It didn't happen over night" Have been thinking about this one for the best part of the previous week.
Now I just gotta hook in and get the job done.
It has to be colour coated and job finished by Monday arvo.

got some work done but somehow I don't think this tailgate will be as nice as i'd like, I may have to spend some time during the week rubing it back and filling in some low spots a bit at a time.

You need a nice long sanding board............. hint if you didn't know~Rip the top of the bog off with a razor so the shiny shit doesn't clog your paper.

just started bucketing down with rain.
which puts me behind scedule. (may as well do a better job now)
I rubbed back the primer coat with a 1/3 sheet sanding block I had, put some spray putty on low areas and a couple of tabs of bog where some stone chips were that I hadent noticed before.
I will give it another primer coat and rub that back then hit it with some colour later in the week, weather permitting. I am pretty stoked at how it is coming along but the proof will be in the colour coat.

Make sure you give spray putty time to dry or it will shrink behind the paint and look like a 400yo oil painting, bog boards are probably available at any auto paint supplier, possibly SuperCrap or Bunnings, mine is probably 20yo and about 40x5cm made of pine? and has a foam pad between the wood and paper, you buy the paper by the meter, start with 600 or 800, plenty of tips on YouTube.

You'd need some wetsuit material (stubby holders) to make your own but they usually have a bit of flex and spring clips to hold the paper at each end, I've seen them as long as a meter long for doing roofs.

thanks d gen, yer I have made the spray putty mistake before, thanks for the reminder as it is easy to forget. I gave the putty light coats 5min apart in the direct sun today then waited 1.5hrs before rubbing, the putty is still open to air ATM cause I didn't get to prime again so it should be well n truly hard by tomorrow arvo when I prime it again.

The 1/3 sheet sanding pad I have will do as i don't want to get too fussy, it does have that wetsuit material stuff on it.
