Hello and welcome to the club,
If you are looking for a good engine I would put an ej25, I have heard that they are built to take a punishment hahah but if you want a lot of power maybe an LS1 V8 (not sure if it fits though)
You should be able to find a decent half cut for around $2500.
Keep us posted if you find what you are looking for

G'day mate and welcome to the forum.
You've got a few options:
1) swap your current engine for a fresher engine of the same type (EA82)
2) rebuild your current engine with some mid cams and a weber. That should get it going alright.
3) buy an early liberty that's been rear ended/side swiped etc - just need a good engine! Strip it for the engine, ECU, wiring loom, gearbox etc. Use these parts to do an EJ conversion.
This option is not for the faint hearted, nor is it a good idea to have a mechanic do it for you as it will cost $$$$s. If you can read a wiring diagram, pic through the wiring for what you need and know how to spin a spanner you *should* be right.
There's a lot to get your head around the first time you strip down a wiring loom, once you've done one the next will be easier! You can read up on this here and this is good reading too.
Typically the EJ22 is the way to go - the early ones are known as being bullet proof and they're an awesome power upgrade on any EA82 - fresh or tired... Plus this conversion has been done to death these days.
Hope this helps you out.
Regards
Bennie

The EJ22 is the most reliable way to gain some good performance/economy.
The EJ25's have problems, but they do go better, while they are running.
As previous post, its cheap and simple to do.
Don't rush into any of them unless you or a "best mate" can understand the wiring.
Good luck, it makes the car a much nicer vehicle.

I'd recommend an EJ conversion but I think EJ22 are getting harder to find, so look for an EJ20 out of an early Forester, then have Gannon cut down your loom for you.
I have adaptor plates and engine mount wedges for you if you need them?

You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.
