air filters and extra oil changes

Post by CCMariner » Tue Jun 10, 2025 2:55 pm

Hi All,
I just bought my first Subaru [2005 Liberty 2.5i auto sedan] and love the driving experience.
I'm so glad that there is a forum like this to ask questions [I'm sure I'll have a few  ].

Kind Regards
CCMariner

Hi,
originally I was going to ask whether I should change the air filter at the same time as doing extra non-logbook oil changes. After thinking on it I figured that it wasnt necessary and asking this question would make me look silly. I forgot to change the subject when I changed my original post. Thanks for following up-its a good sign that forum members are interested and helpful.

I’d leave the air filter to the service intervals unless you live on a dirt road and encounter traffic that causes dust on a regular basis.

Oil changes, if it’s not a performance model it’s probably not worth it. If I was changing oil every 5000km I reckon I’d be doing an oil change every month. Again, I’m doing long runs at cruise speed all the time so my engine doesn’t have as many heat cycles as a typical urban vehicle.

Each to their own. You need to do what works for you - and find the balance between good care and burning a hole in your wallet.

My 5c. Hopefully others chip in too.

Cheers

Thanks Bennie,
Its my first Subaru and I have heard that it should be changed more frequently, but its not a performance model or on dusty roads. It will be freeway commuting so I'll take your advice and just stick with the service recommendations.
Thank you for your help. Hopefully I can offer some help to others in return now. ie I just had a lot of work done by a Subaru specialist who refilled it with Valvoline Restore and Protect 10W40. Apparently its a fairly recent product. I checked with him and he swears by it for older engines. [Liberty 2.5i 2005 model but only 95.5 klms on the clock].

If the recommended oil change distance is 12,500km or 15,000km ditch it for 10,000km.

10,000km seems to be a bit of a standard across many vehicles. And it’s easier to remember/work out the next oil change I’m number.

Subaru engines aren’t any harder on oils than other petrol engines - at least not that I’ve heard of anyway.

We have a Gen3 RX Liberty with the EJ251 (2.5L) in the family. We feed it any 15w-40 from memory. I used to get penrite all the time but recently couldn’t get the semi synthetic I wanted so went with another oil that was on special. Can’t remember the name now, it’s an Aussie company. Since using this oil the engine doesn’t consume as much oil as it did previously.

This is also the engine from factory, 500,000+km on it, I’ve swapped the head gaskets for MLS units from the STi 2.5L model - this gets rid of the leaking head gasket issue. Not had a problem since. Still pulls like a freight train.

Cheers
