I highly recommend the ICOM IC-400PRO

Commercial grade quality. I have had mine for about 8 years and it hasnt missed a beat.

Not sure if they have a newer model that does 80channel. Might be worth looking into.

These guys have always been good when I have bought radios:

Dead link :(

Found the ICOM IC-400PRO, but it's a bit more expensive than I was looking for.

still might be worth saving a bit extra for a unit like that?

Yes the 80 channel is compatible with the old 40 channels. The new 80ch unit's are clearer on the old 40's but they don't come through very clear on the new ones.
I have found distance isn't an issue between the new and old units. It's more so hand held vs CB in car.
Why go old technology if you are getting one, get the new one. In the city especially you notice that the first 40 channels are used often and sometimes find it hard to get a channel to use. My mates and I use them on the freeways, suburbs, highway and offroad when there's more than one car so they are very handy.

I wouldn't be going to get a 40 chan, as you said, with more people going back to UHF etc channel selection can be a premium.

i have a 80 channel with a small aerial on the nudge bar on the foz i got about 12km range that was clear but i havnt tested it any further.
i cant tell you the brand but it is avery good one as its worth 700 odd $$ luckily i didnt pay that much
but like all cb's once in the hills there basically useless unless there basically eye sight

and yes the 80 channels are compatible with the old 40 channels

What is a repeater station?

its what the police radios use, in lamens terms a signal is recieved at point one but then transmits the same message from point one to point two or radio thus giving better coverage

There are repeaters in some places which are on channels that anyone can use. I know there is at least one near me (can't actuall remember the channel though...). I imagine some googling would find you any local ones...

NSW RFS have portable ones that they set up when there is a big fire on.

the duplex channels as said can be used by most people the channel 6 repeater on mount sugarloaf at newcastle lets you transmit as far as wyong south and madowie north about 100km radius but their are some people that think they own it and keep jamming the channel. the farmers use them as well had a apprentice at Murrarundi talk to his mum near gunnedah a distance of 115km away through the repeater network this was before mobile phones became popular. most repeaters turn off in to sleep mode and awaken by double clicking the transmit button on the mic when on the duplex channel

Handheld kit recommendations?

Any opinions on the following handheld kit- does it look OK? I want a handheld for portability/removability.

Uniden UH076SX-NB UHF CB Handheld + AE4012k1 Antenna kit

Is it overpowered for trips out with mates? One of the other packs on the site adequate? Any obvious limitations? 80 ch + repeaters properly? Other features missing/should be looked for? Would a 2W pack (see here- my mate will need to be catered for ) do me?

The above kit misses the 12V car adaptor, whilst the 2W handhelds miss an external aerial (one car, one handheld) which I think is more important. Temporary vehicle fit could be achieved using 3M Dual Lock strip, magnetic base for the aerial. Other ideas?

My previous experience is winch launching gliders on a ~1600m strip with a curve (raised) in the middle, so no line of sight end-to-end. With a handheld Uniden at launch and a proper Icom mounted unit on the winch we'd have trouble unless we placed one aerial on top of a demountable ~6-8ft pole (electrical conduit or the like).

Thanks!
