MY89 RXII 3dr

Post by Turbone » Mon Jul 13, 2009 6:41 am

I've been working on this for 5yrs now. It was quite a basketcase when I got it.
I tried 4 used engines and finally got tired of replacing headgaskets and blowing ring landings off of pistons (oops) and bought a rebuilt from a builder in the States.
I've installed a TD04 and WRX intercooler with the boost at 11.5psi.
It also has a 87.5 intake from a Alcyone Turbo.
K&N panel filter, MSD Coil, NGK Iridium plugs.
2.5in exhaust from the cat back.
Recently did a suspension swap so I can run 5x100 wheels.
Impreza front and XT6 rear, with slotted/drilled disc on all 4.
The wheels are 17in ADR Sukudo's.
Now that most of the mechanical is done, I can start on body work.
I have 2 good doors and bonnet coming the end of the month.
I hope to have new paint before the year is over.
Put it on a dyno last week, but they were having problems with it.
But unofficially it was putting down 160WHP and 197Tq.
I plan on putting it on a different dyno later this week.

not bad. I'm looking at a red one currently in NZ.

find a turbo XT and graft the bonnet scoop into your bonnet. will be a neater look.

This is one hot car. I want one.
Take a look at his pics, http://s286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95 ... e/My%20RX/
there is a video of a road test that gets up to 7500rpm and topped out at about 105mph or 170kmh.
Cheers Rob.

Nice '89! Checked out your album, with studs they truly go anywhere. I commuted last winter everyday from Westport to downtown Seattle. Also pushed water as deep as the top of my headlights getting home to the coast during our last flood. Cant wait to start bringing mine back from the dead. Killed both my EA 82T's in the RX and the wagon at 230,000 miles. Looking forward to seeing more!

Sorry I havent checked in for a while.
I added a engine bay shot in a chat thread, but here it is again.

The latest dyno sheet, prior to installing bigger (250cc) injectors.

And its sporting a WRX hood scoop now.
Image
I cut it in half and removed 4in from the center. Epoxy and bondo filled it in. Its not perfect yet, but I need to re-shoot the bonnet soon anyway.
Heres a little fun I had last month.

Another major update.
My semi-built EA82T finally gave out. I assume the ring lands on #4 piston.
So I had most of the parts for my swap waiting and a few weeks later it was done.
EJ22T

Also installed some GC/Eibach coilovers.

I'm using the stock Fulltime 5spd D/R, but the original had over 200,xxx miles on it and only lasted a month after the swap. I had a spare with lower miles and put that in. I'm getting the funds for a WRX 5spd or a Legacy turbo 5spd, not sure which yet.
The difference in power is amazing, I wish I could drive it all day long :p

Little update.....blew the 2nd stock trans (fulltime dual range and diff lock) last week, time for a better one. Got a Impreza 5spd that has around 209k on it.
Need to mod up a mount and shorten the driveline also. Got some other goodies to go on while it down. WRX front 2 pots, rear e-brake, Perrin 3in downpipe.
The beginning of the year I started working on a improvement for the headlights.
Did lots of research on HID's and projector lenses, this was going to be a big undertaking to do it right.
Instead of typing everything up again here, I'll just give you the link to my write up on USMB (for those that havent seen it yet).

when you do the rear brake use a hond accord lever. it is almost a bolt up.

agree with the difference in power. if you want MORE out of it run it on a 50/50 mix of E85 and the highest grade fuel you can get. that will put a smile on your face.

Another update, seems like I'm always needing to upgrade something!
Now running a 95 Impreza gearbox, so far its holding up ok. Added a Perrin short shifter to the linkage also.
Also installed BC Racing coil overs all around, it really improved the handling.

Image

Installed 2 10in fans in front of the rad for cooling.
Image

LED dome light.
Image

Also installed a fuel cut defender. It fools the ECU into thinking the same amount of air is being drawn in, so now I can get the boost up to 15-16lbs.
But that causes other problems for me now. My clutch is toast :-(
Will be upgrading that to a ACT HD setup soon. Then I will upgrade the brakes, going 4 pots from a RS up front.

I've only just noticed this photo - have you got AC with those fans fitted as well? I'm keen to know as I may do the same thing with my L rather than having a very tight fit with the fans behind the radiator.

Love your coupe, keep up the great work! I'd love to have an RXII!!

Cheers

Was the spider manifold the original fitment?
If not, was there any trouble adapting it (wiring, etc)?

I've got one to go into my Touring Wagon, but I've got to figure out the NA body wiring loom with the turbo engine loom & turbo ECU
