Does anyone have an L series 4wd rear cross member out of the car?

Post by nncoolg » Mon Jun 08, 2015 9:48 am

I want to do some measuring, but I don't have a spare, does anyone have one lying around?

Actually the bushes are the same part from 2wd or 4wd so that may make it easier...

reason for inquiry : I want to get measurements for "part 2" to see if we can find a poly replacement and a look at "part 3" to see what we're dealing with...

ID, OD & Length of 'part 2'
picture of 'part 3'

Update : I just had another look at the parts catalog and all crossmembers are the same 2wd and 4wd so that may help find one...

I have these at home. Will measure and pic tomorrow. If there is a poly replacement for part #2 - I am all ears, er eyes.

Neville here are my findings.

Part#2
ID = 14.5mm
OD = 57mm
H = 60mm
L = 78 The inner steel tube in this bushing extends 9mm either side beyond the 'H' measurement. (similar to rear diff xmember bushings but bigger)

I dont know how to get pics from my S5 into my PC so I couldnt upload pic I took of part#2.

This pic of part#3 is borrowed from else where.

I wonder does someone have an old crossmember that can press one of these bad boys out so we can get a proper OD measurement?

Also, keen to see other sides of the 'flat' bush to see how it looks...

when you get time ;)

This is the one that I reckon may go close based on your preliminary measurements (compared at the bottom)...

Your certainly keen on this one arent you. I like the idea of replaceing every bush on the old L, but why these ones. They will be a mongrel to wrestle with once you muster the courage to remove from vehicle.
I suppose I could remove the ones outta the one I have. But I expect it to be an epic job.

They look a bit like the moustache bar/rear diff pinion mounting bush on a Brumby, roughly same size. In which case you really need a press and specially made punch + die to get them out "easily". Otherwise you're cutting/burning the rubber insides out then hacksaw and hammer/chisel out the shell...which is not a fun job :(
Will it ever end!?

I tend to agree with you there SB. And I have stripped down a couple of rear diff xmembers and the matching pinion mounts using all 12tons of a workshop presses force. Talk about busting a poop poov valve as Carl Barron would put it!

Why these bushings? Well I figure there's no point in stiffening up suspension components if what they're mounted to is all mushy.

About as much point as a 'cat back' exhaust when the pipes in front of it are smaller. Start at the top and work down or don't bother.

Actually I'm not sure why the crossmember is rubber mounted when all the parts branching of it are insulated as well. The front crossmember is bolted straight to the body...

That makes sense. I like your thinking.

Removing those bushings is a bit of an excuse for me to finally get around to putting speedholes + blasting and powder coating that rear crossmember ;)
No promises. I will see how I go for time this week.

Doubt there is an aftermarket for these particular mounts. My thought would be to fill these with urethane in order to firm them up.
