New: AUSubaru Tech. Manual up - ausubaru.wikidot.com

Post by 60766244 » Fri Nov 16, 2012 11:03 am

I took a while getting it going because I tried 3-5 other 'wiki' sites before I settled on one that was a) Free, b) Easy to use, c) Had minimal advertising and d) security - Hopefully it all works out...

I've recovered some information from the old Tech Manual ( http://www.ausubaru.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page - dead ) and now placed it into a functioning manual on a new page ( http://www.ausubaru.wikidot.com )

It's still very rough a needs work to make clean and pretty but I will get that done in a couple of days.

I will eventually sort out moderator rights for people and 'memberships' for light editing yourselves, but in the mean time post in this thread for any changes you see as beneficial to the site or any pages I should add.

In about a week or so it should have photos up and be all clean and well formatted.

From there once housekeeping has been conquered then I will start adding information as requested.

Current pages planned to build in it:
  • A 'Subaru Costs' page - where all can enter info about servicing/parts etc.
  • A "Subaru Numbers" page where all part numbers could be listed including paint codes and various spec's
  • ...Too be extended....
Enjoy...

Well done and thanks for the mention, I really like the fact that you have to be a member of the wiki to edit the pages.

I have information in PDF form on carby upgrades and SPFI as well if you want them or the links for the information. As well as a plethora of links and pdf FSMs (we need a server)

I may even be tempted to do a spam free write up of the EJ carby conversion :)

Good job so far ... :D

P.S. - There are several posts & how to's here on this site that could be extracted & added to the new wiki site, we just need to find them ... :-|

Maybe start with a few of these :
Although the last one is still incomplete, it would be handy to add ... ;)

See what else I can find ...

All sounds good.

TOONGA - I'd like to see them... Are they worth copy/pasting or simply linking to the site?

BANTUM - Cheers, I will get to linking those up as soon as I can.

If anyone has issues with any posts of theirs being on the wiki, PM me and let me know and I can remove any mention to you (otherwise I will credit people by default) or either take down the information, and re-write as required.

Some work done tonight:
- Tidied up some pages with terrible grammar/formatting or left-over code and over CAPITALISATION
- Removed duplicates
- Emptied the Misc. page into several other pages including:
- More info into "Engine"
- "Subaru Costs"
- "Subaru Numbers"

More to be done tomorrow.

Cheers

Bantum, TOONGA - All the links you've put up on this thread and the info contained within has been transferred to the wiki.

Cheers for the help! - It's starting to come together!

I eagerly await more in that PM, TOONGA.

Thanks good work so far ... :D

A few things you might want to add :
- add a link / reference to the original source ...
- allow for Notes: at foot of page for updates, etc ...

Another area of improvement would be to better structure the main index; i.e.
under the navigation add suitable headings for each catergory ( Similar to our web site ) eg:

- General
- Workshop
- Tools
- Manuals
- Brochures
- Links

Then place relavent threads under them.

I hope that helps tidy up the site ... :)

Cheers, Bantum ...

I've given some headings to the menu to help guide people as you suggested and I have set it up so it credits people at the bottom of each page they contributed too.

I will make links to relevant threads where possible when I get a moment.

I also set up a comments section accessible from the home page and at the top tab menu labeled "Discuss". I tried adding a HTML code comment box at the bottom of each page but whenever any of the code of the site gets edited it seems to wipe all comments. I'll research it, but for now we have at least one comment section that should be stable.

I've already had a couple of strange spam-like edits on the site. Working to ensure its security so it might take longer to work out how to make it user-editable whilst keeping the site safe.

Cheers,
Otter the 2004 Outback with all the fruit.

Congrats and EE20 diesel

Post by pitrack_1 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:49 pm

Brilliant work, people! I'm sure it will be much appreciated by many. I can only hope one day to know as much and contribute as usefully as you.

One minor edit, perhaps on the engines page the EE20 could be labelled a diesel... nothing a the moment to indicate it is different to the petrols. Also, the different sizes... I'm intrigued, having not heard of any? Certainly there are different revisions: nominally the same outputs but substantial configuration and internal changes (like turbos, conrods, pistons, electronics, injectors, EURO4/5/6(?) emission controls, etc).

Thanks,
Patrick

Thanks,
All the info has been provided by Bantum in regards to the motors. For me it's been mainly editing and copy-pasting. I will track down your EE20 and mention its diesel status. For the rest I guess research will need to come into it. Right now it's all just skin and ligaments. Muscle and flesh needs to be found. ;)

I might have to go over the list again, as there are a few error's & omissions + heaps more detials to add. Can you please advise what is the best way to make corrections + add info to the wiki site now that is up & running ?

P.S. - Have you sorted out editing privilages yet ? as there is also stuff on wiki that dosn't need to be there ...

P.P.S. + If I do make changes to the source - I'll notify you.

See below. :)

Sorted editing this arvo... (I think)

Everyone who wants to contribute to the wiki must do the following

If it's something simple and you're not interested in going full-bore into wiki-making, just PM me or hit me up on the 'talk' or 'discuss' page on the wiki. Alternatively, drop the info into this thread and I will work it from there.

Instructions:
- Read this entire post before editing.
- Read all of it.
- Go onto ausubaru.wikidot.com
- Try 'edit' something.
- You will be prompted to create a wikidot account.
- You must create a wiki-dot account.
- You should be able to edit articles and rename and create pages
- You will not be allowed to delete pages or anything like that - talk to me if you want something removed, pages deleted or something drastic like that.
- You cannot re-name a page once created. If you do, all the information on it will be lost forever. Be aware of this.
- Before editing ANY article, make a copy of the code (text shown in the edit-box) and save it in Notepad, this means if the fecal matter hits the fan, you can simply copypaste your way back to safety.
- Don't wipe out any info (unless grossly inaccurate), remove anyone's credit where due or cause general mayhem.
- No rudeness/swearing/politics/opinions or any of that other banned stuff, this is about classic Subarus and that's it.
- PM me here every time you edit something, just so I can keep tabs on what's what.
- If something goes horribly wrong - let me know, I'll see if I can rescue it.
- If you want to be credited with your edit or info, you may add your name to the bottom of the page you edited. Add your name only, do not add lots of '!!!' or '>>>>>NAME<<<<' to make it obvious you edited it. Keep it clean.
- Add sources where possible below the credits section. Link them neatly. If you can't, again, contact me, I'll do it.

Tips:
- Follow the guidelines on the front page of the ausubaru.wikidot.com
- If you don't like formatting/grammar or making things neat, it's best to PM me with your article/info or edit with all the features mentioned on the wikidot that you can add as stated on the front page - I'll simply do it for you and make sure it goes off without a hitch.
- Look at the code as it is on the pages, try not to mess with it or the formatting, the buttons at the top of the edit-box will give a guide.
- It's best to PREVIEW all articles before saving, make sure everything you've done is neat and makes sense.
- Proof-read - again and again.
- Spell-check is our friend.
- Copy-Paste your code often into note-pad, as a reference and as a guide, or if something goes wrong.
- Try keep articles non-personal, and factual. State where only anecdotal evidence has been found. (this I am working on editing out of the webarchive-rescued articles)
- Add photos where relevant - I'm working on getting some photos into existing content. Please do-so too.
- If someone edits your work, or adds too it, great
- NO TYPING WHOLE LINES, PARAGRAPHS OR TITLES IN CAPSLOCK - I will delete all sections irrespective of nature found to have this. I'm working to remove all existing capitalization from the existing text. Full capitalization is hard to read and painful.
- Have fun.
- No MSN talk or strange language.

I hope all this works out, the above text makes sense and this wiki can continue to grow. :)

Any questions the site cannot answer, hit me up.

Cheers,
Otter the 2004 Outback with all the fruit.

I had another look at the site & it is coming along, allthough the formatting for the 'Engine' page is all wrong ... :( I will have a go at fixing it when I can.

P.S. - The engine list part should be moved under 'general' with heading of 'subaru engines' while the engine mods & repairs etc. left separate in 'workshop' pages.

If you're after links, check out the stickies in the tech sub forums. There's some great stuff there but it might be worth checking with the OP if it's ok to add it to the manual.

I'm amazed at how quickly and efficiently you've got this up and running!

Cheers
