Some free GPS POI sites

Post by daveosubi » Tue Jan 16, 2007 12:29 pm

Just thought id post these links up,
It can be hard to find poi's, and I dont like people getting ripped off from ebay sellers. Luckily these good people provide free poi's

This one has heaps:
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~oztt/Downlads.htm

With this one, also click on the names near the top to see more poi's from different people
http://members.iinet.com.au/~cbbbdl/mixo.htm

Download managers are handy for these sites, Im using firefox with getright and flashgot to download all these poi's without having to click on each link.

These work with tomtom, I dont know about others.
For a pda to install these you just unzip the files to a folder and copy the contents of that folder your "australia" map folder (usually on the memory card)

I've had mixed success with POI files I have downloaded for free, often the co-ordinates are out by a long way, sometimes even in the wrong suburb or town! Kind of defeats the purpose of a GPS.

Here is a file for Shell Servos. I have (painstakingly) updated many of the NSW sites, cannot guarantee accuracy of other states. If anyone is interested in confirming accurate co-ordinates (within 20m should be fine) for any of the sites in there, please update and re-post. Alternately you can list the site details and co-ords on the WGS84 datum in decimal degrees format (4 or 5 decimal places) and I can do it.

I got most of mine from here: http://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/australia/

Though I certainly don't trust the co-ordinates at all. Wonder if their paid service is any better - you'd hope so,
