Why is UHF so Damned expensive?

Why is it so?

I mean, I can buy a 27mhz radio and aerial for well under $200 in GME, but for UHF it is at least $300 for just the radio. I mean, it's not like there is serious gizmology going on, it is just a bit of electronics....

Is it the "fad" thing?

I would say that you are correct about it being a fad thing, has been on the rise for a few years now.
Were you after a particular radio, might be able to help with a price.

We sell everything... i would choose GME from personal choice... performance... looks... add on accessories... and they seam to stuff up less. We sure are making a packet out of replacing Uniden microphones lately.

I can't think of an upside to a Uniden apart from them being a little cheeper. Im not trying to argue with you by the way just offering my opinion. CB radios are 90% of what i do.

Ben I know your love toys - so get an ICOM IC400PRO

Its one of the best sets around in my opinion, and i can knock up a programming cable for you and all the software so you can set it up with your laptop ;) It will fit nicely in your outback dash too

UHF / AM is no different to anything else. UHF is the newer technology so they can still charge a premium for it. AM is on its way out and the price reflects that. Its got very little to do with how much it costs to make..

People also love UHF because of the sound quality. It's possible to tell who u are talking to based on the tone of there voice on UHF... this is very difficult on AM CBs.

The IC400PRO is a great little unit... we have just got a HUGE contract to sell them and actually can't get enough to fill our orders.

Make sure you match the antenna to your use too. Its no good having the worlds best unit if you go and attach a crapola antenna.
