wanted: MY front wheel drive 5 speed box in SA.

Post by Willy Fisterbottom » Fri Aug 14, 2015 9:18 am

My red Fugly Brumby died in South Oz about 6 weeks ago, synchro hub picked up on the 5th gear running surface. I pulled them out and drove back to NSW in a 84 Touring wagon I bought for an American Subie nut coming over for a holiday next year. I cleaned up the hub and gear on a lathe and flew back yesterday, but as soon as I do the nut up more than about 15Nm the synchro hub locks onto the gear. So it looks like I'll have to split the case and delve deeper. I thought I had this covered as I found a local wrecker that had a 5 speed MY in a car down the back of the yard that was on the ground with 2 over cars on top, they were gonna get it out for me. 6 weeks later it's still in that car and too boggy to get it out anytime soon. Anyone in SA have or know of a fwd MY box for sale? I really need to fix this and drive home asap. I'm in Brompton and have tools and a mates car to go get one.

Cheers,

Willy.

Don't worry, I used a synchro hub out of an L series. Seems to work, will find out on the 1400km drive home.

I take it that your series 1 Brumby is not 4WD ?

Take it easy on the trip back, make sure you get home safely ... :)

Ciao, Bantum ...

Cheers mate. I took out all the 4WD running gear as I'd never take it of the road and it's my daily driver doing 200km a day, fwd 5 speed uses less fuel and goes better not having to rotate that rear diff around everywhere :p

makes it easier for a home build exhaust - straight out down the back with a tidy exit just below the tailgate. She is a little screamer :p
