'91 Sportswagon $400 ono - Brisbane

Post by wildflower » Tue Jul 01, 2008 11:44 pm

Registered till August though sell unregistered.
Has heavy duty rectangular bull bar*, towbar and roof racks.
Some major/ish issues: bearings either/or both of gearbox/transfer case, brakes, windscreen and associated rust.
However other aspects fine: exchange engine, new water pump & radiator a year ago, front end work including the proverbial c.v.'s new six months ago, spare tyre never used, (air con, electric mirrors etc work well).
Can drive short distances slowly or tow complete for parts/scrap.

*car did well through two poor ol' grandpappy roos

Need to conclude in July so please put us out of our limbo misery!

letting go of the wheels am sentimental over

Oops sorry 'bout the delay...having online challenges....part of which is continually getting chucked off this! Will try answering general questions also from private messages, so no one's missed out *lol*

Apparently the engine dropped in around May last year was under 250,000kms. At this moment, post move (with papers in a box somewhere), not sure if the km's on the clock were noted. As in, to approx the approx difference. Unlike the earlier days, not much usage since change over, e.g. mainly 5km leg trips round Ippy to break up the hermity days. Only managed two nthrn NSW coast 'n' mtn circles in the time.

Carburetor; no lift; no oil leaks - in fact get away without topping up oil or water for months; compression ok (though not as rapt in as previous one - think it's an EA). Somehow fooled (whilst pleasantly surprising) a bigger engine snob. May be tricky to assess given the bearing handicap.

Selling the bull bar separately would depend on what other complete offers are etc. What would you be willing to pay for it? Will then be able to compare etc. Body under front is munched up from rougher days, yet bull bar is solid as ever, traces of radio mounting. Similar story as somewhere else read this site re spotties.

Locale: Ipswich

Oh and if anyone wants a photo, make up for my lack of technowledge, contact and take me through the steps of uploading!

Hey mate.

Sorry I have been unable to call, had a bit of a busy day despite the fact i received the email earlier.

Predominant interest lays in the engine and radiator, and tis good that it has no hydrolic adjuster tick or oil :) I will call tomorrow.

Was the engine just a straight swap from another car or re-con'd?

ANyway, will give ya a call tomorrow evening. Thanks for getting back to me despite the computer issues.

Cheers,

Andy

more info - well turned out to be a rave

Sorry to say couldn't afford reconditioned, yet ended up paying much more all toll through one of those yellow pages mob with a big ad who told me I needed a radiator (dubious, but anyhews, that's how it came to be acquired new). Rather than straight swap as such, gather it may have come off a shelf, 'cause within three weeks during my over the border trip, it began to overheat due to faulty waterpump! Which in itself took an inordinate amount of sleuthing to arrive at - dependency sucks#.

Picking whoever blokes' brains at the time (& most were stumped - the local mechanic** in woop woop town was certainly rubbing his hands, saying new motor, the works adding hundreds more 'for freight' from Sydney*; expecting me to cough up well over what I'd just scrimped and borrowed three months for!), appears the culprit lay in rubber seals becoming hard and brittle when sitting for too long.

So that's how the water pump came to be acquired new. The one they replaced my perfectly good one with (unbeknownst to me***), leaked from the start, but they tried to make me wrong for that. Since wasn't up for a small claims battle (as yet another side skirmish detracting from the real/bigger ones life can dish up) and as if I'd throw more $ at 'em [KARMA]; that's how I found a wonderful suby specialist that are brilliant and I swear by them. Sure they cost reaching double the mediocre (at best) ones - and I'm at the bottom of the pile resource wise - but hey, I learned that paying for honesty was better than not. When more accessible options void, of course.

Besides they treated me with dignity and respect, making a list of to-dos mindful of prioritising also according to affordability.

# one of the best things about once-upon-a-time was a feller with know how, tools, tenacity, inventiveness and innovation from which to learn. Sense of empowerment, a bonding activity to share and $ saved.
** what made it worse was he was my best friend's buddy; how aghast was he that against his dire grounding orders I were bold enough >Hah! (read: desperate yet not that foolish) to take it over the range back home. With plenty of water on hand and prepared for lengthy stops, no drama being cool enough in the early morning
* all parts are shifted everywhere; reasonable regional margins aside, know that one from way back - hail from Darwin where back then you'd laugh them into sense or walk to where it was.
*** Convinced ditto with bearings as detected crook sound (minus diagnostic ability) upon leaving their premises. (So much for my subsequent advisors - too hard basket. hey only human...front end specialist, suby specialist...) Unless they thrashed it. May sound paranoid but other illogical, dishonest practices + unsavoury mechanic keen suby owner of same model!!! {know that sounds outrageously judgemental, which is against my nature. But ripoff bullies get way with it in a society geared to turn a blind eye.}

Well should my cynical whinging bring a bad reputation, I hope some of my experiences serve to prevent possible situations happening to others.

After checking out the wonderful get-together look-sees that happen with this club, am quite *sniff sniff* taken with regret that didn't reach out sooner and join in. Certainly would have learnt a lot and bonus, banish the isolation. Now that would merrily do so, CAN'T boo hoo hoo.

Very tempting though. Grounded wheels for three weeks when the reverberations drilled through my head, then out of need with the house move, recommissioned again - beginning with nights and very early mornings. To actually currently limpin' round my many busy committments - short local trips, which ain't cool, cos I either wave the others behind me round or speed up faster to limit than the 'ideal' 20*snort* -40ks tops. Hard act trying not to draw attention while compensate heaps.

Well I know squat 'bout this issue, yet reason trying not to labour it excessively [yeah: motion] has bought me more listing time. Have taken it on longer, like 70k round trips out of calculated madness a few times, thanking God to have made it back. That is, when public transport will be over 21/2 hours one way & had to drag stuff etc.

So to rephrase, have done 80ks/hr on hwy to the chagrin of the free flowing rest. In case anyone sort of interested, upon acquisition, would rather pace it than tow - it is an option. Just pick less trafficky time - and be very alert - cos the loss of brakes combined make it jump ship time for me.

Presently - all things going well with a mobile safety cert person, that the bloke who's been doing the odd jobs getting somebody else's el cheapo bomb going for me...is supposed to be teeing up, I'll have the crucial other wheels going within a week or two.

Well, have been procrastinating heaps now. Seeing as sharing lots of private stuff (or is that blah blah), just making clear that the desperation referred to several times - impact of limited resources, support - carries no double meaning in any other context other than the wider scope of (lack of)understanding and justice. 'N' hey ain't that true for an ailing, lost world.

Just as well these sites are kept clean, cause those who think that way, 'd have a field day with my nuances. What to do when this occurs? Well won't edit my expressiveness, because twisting/projecting ain't my problem.

Hey Andy, if you've persevered - gargantuan apologies for turning into a spiel far from your answers in mind. How could I just go off on a sub conscious "well I'll aim this at the general suby forum audience now". For all I know, your eyes could be figuratively rolling - at best. Please not feeling patronised! [My goodness, would be fascinated to see what studies are out there re how & what cyberspace communities elicit in people. All the ego stuff, how we reflect onto people, perception etc as extensions to our face to face communication styles; how increasing physcial screen/keyboard connection is turning us kinda robotic.]

Shameless self revelation, that if any appropriate category, ought be in subychat. Feel free to chuck this in there, dear moderator. Too hard to cut n paste on this laptop, besides, just besides. After zoning in on the classies, getting stumped then lookin' round also read that can learn somewhere (amidst digging for gems on this site) how to upload photos. Hmmm, so any club perusers may bear in mind in the future a way of cross referencing/indexing so that newbies like me save firing off questions requiring 'hit the repeat button' answers to the dismay of the veterans. For that matter, have a feeling am getting qld club site mixed up with a wider forum - no? Seems all so seamless as to be one. Bearings, steady.

Ok well if have success with car minus pics, may not get to learning that skill just yet. (Obviously I have an emotional need to offload the wordiness.) Isn't that the bonus with text - you don't have to take notice/pretend to be polite (despite largely being so) if uninterested. If anyone thinks my suggestion is worth expanding the site for - which gather comes down to the ol' manpower - happy to be taught and spend time on myself WHEN I get time, not likely this year.

So think I've exhausted my time here. In 'another lifetime' will be back round this space as an Outback owner. Not those two tone ones, then again will depend on how relatively better off. (tee hee> get to indulge my private rare wishful thinking.) Is this healthy? Oh well this place is rife with it...Just some you guys are passionately wired for it. Joke eh - here's me [from a low key, anything but ostentatious materialism measure], worried 'bout immodesty just stating a want - what's encourged in our society while some of you guys simply revel in waving it, glossing it, parading and flexing the power of it! *chuckles* Just realised this has brought up a metaphor for (some) women use their bodies how likewise (some) men use their vehicles as their status attractant stimulus. Even if they're narcissisticly stimulating themselves more than anything. Eeewwoops, slap myself for foot in mouth cynical witchiness..g'nite...or it that g'morning.....put it down to insomnia, shall we?
....as one drags herself away....."refreshing there's thinking talented people here, some who share amazing pics of breathtaking scenery, others contributing to the excellent powerhouse of top information, welcoming spirit, general good energy and encouraging vibe. Well done, many thanks".....
