305ci, 2 turbos, 5032lbs and a 1/4 mile !

Just for a laugh I took my Cruiser to the strip the week before last.

Car weighted in at 5032lbs(~2.3Tonnes) with-out me in it......so thats about 5250lbs on the line !

I wasn`t using 1st gear(shock load into 2nd would destroy a small planet and its moons !!!) So all starts were done in 2nd with lots of clutch slip....altho by the ~4th run wheel spin was a real problem anyway....

You can see/hear in this vid(I apologise for the pissed camera man ! f`n poor effort ....this footage was the best he got out of 6 runs !!!) the BOV ptttsh just off the line...this is because I backed off due to wheel spin and then went again !!

Cruiser 1/4 mile !

Was only planning on shooting for trap speed really.... 95.4 mph was the best. using the speed calc thats a pretty healthy hpatw figure :D car rocks to drive with ~360hpatrw(and buckets of torque)....driveline losses in a landy with 32" wheels must throw the fwhp figure up around 450hp.

Image

I had about 4 runs with the Silver VY GenIII ute....on the run in the vid he ran 14.6 and me 14.9.....even the new GenIII utes with the f`d up body kit on the rear, twin pipes and a 300Kw badge could only beat me by no more than .3-.4 of a sec :D There was a quiet a few surprised faces, and "wtf`s in that!" from the Barry lanes(lane 1 & 2 were the ford and Holden v8 fellas hang out ). I just say its std mate ;)

I`ve done a bit more tuning since then...managed stable 14.5psi and eliminated det @ peak torque with out water/meth injection, colder plugs and almost 14 degree BTDC under full boost@peak torque. Drifts nicely on a dry road :D

OS

PS: It uses subaru turbo`s !!(VF10`s)...so can i still come on subi cruises/outings ??? :D

Justin, you never cease to amaze me. Can't beleive you're still running the VF10's - I'd have thought they'd have run out of puff by now!
Did you end up doing the top overhaul on that 305?
Good to see you're shaming Commodore owners, in any way, shape or form! We'll have to have a run when I get my wagon back on the road.

I'm starting an injected TT 350 project soon too, was going to be 377ci (destroked 400) but I caved on that due to siamese bore block! Funds are proving hard to come by atm so I'm researching more and more.

Thanks guys, its was a load of fun and barrel of laughs :D

Tim - we should talk......I just imported a set of trick flow alloy heads(Kenny Duttwieler signature series :D) for SB chev...specced up for ~550hp .540 lift, cnc chambers, 195cc ports etc etc....Theres also some nice AFR forced induction series heads on JEGS or Summit ;)

...then theres the scat, lunati or come racing 383 strocker kits....crank, long rods, pitons, rings and bearing for sfa, real cheap ! all you need in a 4" bore block ;)

The postage from the US killes($410aud for the heads, arrived in 5 days from order)...but its still way cheaper than buying local, and the range or choice is incredible !

No I haven`t rebuilt or touched the 305.....still all stock internals except for crane cam, I am planning to rebuild it but it will be turned into a 350 as there is fa hottie stuff avaliable for a 305...

Do you have much of a problem with axle-wrap in the 60-Series? I would have thought you'd have thrown a uni by now.

By axel wrap do you mean tramp or ?

...driveline bar the gb has been very stout.....only weak points with the cruiser design is the axel flange bolt/pins, and the gear box(1,2,3 cluster...and 5th shaft).... diffs are as strong as 9 "...and I`ve been running a Ti carrier detriot soft locker for many years. Only last weak have I ditched the locker and gone for a modded late model LSD set-up(Detriot was fun but enoughs a enough !!...I`m too old for the side step on every corner in the wet and the bang a clang bang)

Tail shaft and uni`s in a "FJ62" are very big units...still running originals with 385,000 on them...

Also just installed custom lovell`s spings and koni adjustables all round ;)

As for axel tramp.....theres always a solution for that !! Spin the wheels faster and drift !!....stab clutch, limiter , swing, dump, drift, feather limter ! :D

Cheers

I had a friend with a Suzuki with 37s and a 1.6, he wrapped a rear leaf one day, destroying the rear uni on his tailshaft due to the obscene angle caused by the broken spring; I've seen similar things happen to leaf-sprung cars at the drag strip.

Obviously your springs are strong enough and your traction is low enough to avoid the terrible consequences of the leaf springs + horspower equation.

Oh ok, .... well i actually just installed the new springs and shocks because I snapped the RR spring a recent gravel track drfit run....they were the original 380K springs tho so I didn`t blame em !....I thick it was the 3rd gear drift thru a round-about in the dry on the way out bush that did the damage.

Should be ok with new springs and high tensile u-bolts etc.....I have a friend with a 400(408ci)chev(12.9:1 , long rod, alloy headed 620hp build...avgas drums in the back, and 4 point harnesses ! :p) & TH350 in a short 40, we set-up the car up so it can get some fairly good air and land(2+ metres onto a tabletop sand dune). After bending diff housings, tail shafts, smashing swivel hub&pinion bearings, breaking springs and bending chassis we have worked out the right combo`s and a sweet duel shock set-up.

Its all good fun ;)

how do you estimate your whp from the trap speed? Just wondering what my power estimate would be for a 100mph trap speed (Lib B4)

http://www.speedworldmotorplex.com/calc.htm

A 13.6 is an impressive result for a stock B4, well done, have you been tweaking boost or anything ?

Your car would wiegh ~3000lbs ....next time you go to WAW ask nicely to put your car on the scales ;)

13.6, 2.1 and 100mph ! quiet a strange result as your hp calculates higher by the ET than Trap speed, suggests being driven very well ...but then a 2.1 60 foot suggests not ! Interesting.

its not completly stock.. Turbo back exhaust, bigger FMIC, POD Filter in Guard. And i haven't really fiddled with the boost its just running a bit more than it should because of the exhaust. (I've actually reduced wastegate duty cycles alot to try and keep boost to 15-16psi)

also i don't think i can launch it much better than that (that was launched from around 6500rpm) and clutch pulled out pretty quick (not quite dropped). Dropping just caused it to bog.
