Hey guys,

Anyone here got any experience with low power cables over long distances?

I'm looking to run a cable from the back of our AIS on the bridge down to the Control Room. The distance is about 50mtrs but the laid cable length would probably be closer to 70mtrs.

The AIS has a RS422 comms port and I want to run it in to the Windows 7 Enterprised based PC.

My question is, what is the best way to connect these 2 systems?

Cheers,
Paul

I'm No expert in this area, but my understanding is that you might need a repeater, no idea how far apart it will need to be though.

See more here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS-485

Further : A network hub or line driver, may be what your after : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_driver

Add : I just looked up this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS-422

It states a max distance of approx. : 1500m ...

So I'd check your unit to see what its specs are - do you still have the instructions ?

Most likely sounds like it will need some sort of repeater/booster I believe.

The AIS is the SAAB R4 Class A model and here is a link to its website tech page...

There's a link with a Tech Support help page : http://www.saabgroup.com/en/Civil-secur ... s/#Manuals

It might also be worth a try giving them a bell to find out what's required ... ;)

So does yours look like this ?

Can you convert the signal to wireless and back again?

RS422 will easily do 70m with good quality twisted pair cable.

then just add one of these to your PC

Serial comms is a large chunk of what i do for a crust so any questions ask away.

A 15,000T floating steel structure that drills holes in the sea bed :)

Nah.. too much steel around.. signal would be lost

Perfect. Does this require addition power? What is the best quality cable to use and can we buy it explosion proof (EX rating?) and lastly, can we buy it Aus?

Perhaps avoiding any electrical issues and using fibre optic might be safer?

mate if your install is running through an EX environment you need to get some better advice than asking on a subaru forum ;)

I would highly recommend you talk to the manufacturer of the gear and go from there.

Exactly
Bantum wrote:And you need some form of protection from blow back right ?
Yeah kinda.. we need to eliminate any chances of spark/ignition sources.

That's probably a good possibility. I'll look in to that.

Thanks VV but from what I've found from talking to people on this site, is there is a lot more to them than just enjoying the fantastic experience of owning a Subaru. So whilst I agree it's not the best place to ask about this stuff, it's great to get people talking about stuff they might even do for a living.

Thanks for your advise and like I said to before, I've sent an email off to the manufacture of this system and hope to hear from them soon.
