Thoughts on shark culling.

Hey guys,

After the recent shark attack at Wedge island just north of Perth do you think shark culling is a viable idea?

I personally think this is a one off rogue shark and it should be hunted. Sharks normally take one bite of a human and then leave, realising its not a seal or whatever. This one however came back for the remains and even had a go at his mate on a jet ski who tried to help.

I knew the guy who got taken and it's been a really tough few days, alot of my other mates were really close to him and it kills me to see what they're going through.

I always had the opinion that we are entering their habitat and they are king out there, but when it gets personal, your opinion totally changes.

i think the shark that does attack a human should be killed especially in the nature that this attack took place, we've had quite a few attacks (all of which fatal) and alot more sightings recently which for someone who surfs several times a week it's a scary prospect but i don't think mass culling is necessarily the answer, surely the government can poor enough money into research to come up with a viable solution especially considering the negativity these incidents are breeding towards the states beach which are probably the bigest draw card for west australia's tourism .. either way something needs doing

This is a tough one to reply to, it is more than likely I surfed with Ben out at Triggs when he was a grommet as he looks really familiar. My condolences to all.

We surf knowing that there are many ways we could be injured or even killed. Over the 30+ years I have spent in the water I have seen people drown, guys break their back, not including the countless other injuries as well. This isn't the first to be killed by a shark. Believe me when I say Im talking about WA not Australia or worldwide.

In many ways we as humans are responsible for these shark attacks and I do believe as time goes on there will be more attacks.

Like any other animal that has killed a human it will be back for more, how are land animals treated when they kill humans? if they are domestic pets they are euthanasied, wild animals are hunted and "culled" sadly it should be no different for this shark.

Yeah bad way to go, gotta feel for the family. 5 Deaths in 10 months wasn't it? which now makes it worse than the tip of Sth Africa. if they were to kill the shark, how would they know which one it was?

Unfortunately it's a double standard in terms of how a human can treat animals isn't it?

I personally think the way Alex has mentioned about us in their territory. But if the shark is a "multiple offender" then I feel that it has to go - but being sure that we've got the right shark could be the issue.

To hell with the sharks, they don't create tourism (or very little and cage watching has been knocked on the head and would only encourage more near our shores) we really need tourism for our economy, we need safe beautiful beaches which we've been known for for a long time, not terrified people scared to go more than ankle deep, I can assure you if there were rogue elephants, tigers etc killing people in tourist area's in other countries they would be either removed or culled as they do with crocs in the NT, bit hard to remove a 6m shark so BANG!!!

Aw crap, when in the water we are in herring and salmon country too and nobody minds killing them, just a bigger species of the same animal and they taste great.

First of all, condolences to all affected by this horrible event. Its always tough to lose someone you know and the unexpected manner of Ben's passing makes it seem even more senseless.
The only thing that I would like to say in regards to this event is that if we have to cull sharks that take a human life I feel we will also have to cull d*ckheads who run around nightclub districts randomly bashing people and (however inadvertantly) killing them.
At least you can see why the shark did what it did.

Well said, open season in Northbridge between 3am and 5am, anyone causing fights gets shot in the knee.
