Honest advice - 82 Touring wagon for sale.

Post by Cliff R » Sat Mar 31, 2012 6:34 pm

:(:(The minister for finance and fun (extremely lacking at the moment) and I had this afternoon what amounted to our version of a domestic over cars:(:(
It appears the minister in question has decided I am an idot (not the term used but it was clear this was the intention) for wanting to own 2 cars. This has been simmering for a while but today it reared its head. Comments and insinuations were made on the lines of I have bought a "dud" in the L series as it, "shock horror", needs one of the heater hoses replaced. The MY is sitting gathering dust so is a waste of everything. Never mind her money pit which needs 2 x CV boots on the RH front, 2 x front brake rotors and a set of front brake pads replaced, this is all acceptable apparently.
I dont have the time or energy to argue as I prefer to spend my time on productive things like staying sane and not inflame the situation.
To this end I have decided to part with one of my Subaru's.
Unfortunately, the car to be sold will be the 1982 Touring wagon.
It is silver in colour, was an auto but I converted it to a 4 speed with dual 4WD 3.7 ratio, it is fitted with a Sporpion 80WP full block aluminium 2" lift kit which is NSW Engineers approved, it has power steering and A/C. It will also come with the 1982 Subaru 8 spoke alloy wheels. The interior is in pretty good shape and it has electric windows all round.
The bad points are the faded paint, some cracking of the seats on the non velour edges of the seating, the A/C needs gasing as it is not cutting in or out, the 4 speed sometimes has issues going into 4th gear unless it is double shuffled but I think this is due to worn gear stick bushes. I have a new set/kit of gear stick bushs from Frog but I have not fitted them yet. The front bumper has a bit of a crease on the RH side and there is a bit of rust on the LH front window pillar which I have repaired years ago and may now need more attention. It also has an Aunger exterior rear window louver.
It has rego in NSW till the 7th of June 2012.
I need to know very seriously what sort of value I should be asking for on the car. I realise sentimentally (we have owned the car since 1998) it is worth heaps but realistically not so.
I would appreciate honest comments and suggestions only as I am way past seeing the funny side to this issue::(:(

You've come to the right place. The unit is 30 years old - no one wants them and they are worth nothing more than their scrap content - black iron is fetching $50 a tonne i was told the other week when they gave me $20 for my L Wagon body. How abouts you produce $50 for the missus, tell her it has been sold and just waiting on pick-up, telling her the other $50 bought new hoses for the L :D

??

Honest !!

It has more than scrap value Jonno, it's a touring wagon! Even bog standard MY wagons go on gumtree here in SA for around $500.
Will it ever end!?

Not hijacking the thread but have been facing the same issue for a few years now with pressure mounting from my minister of finance over owning two brumbies. One is my runaround go to work and everything else and the other is my good turbo brumby for weekends only.

Its only the rego thing because I'm sure they realise that you don't use more fuel owning two cars as you can only drive one at a time.

So the daily is going to be offloaded soon but needs a few things done first...

Good point steptoe, even if its more like a few hundred$. But something tells me she wont go for it!

Such a shame you have to pay this price for "keeping the peace" but perhaps someone on here will give her a good home (the wagon that is lol)

I'd try posting on Offroad Subarus as well.

Good luck mate, I hope it all works out...

Poor Cliff was after honest advice, and you guys missed it, the idea was to tell his missus it was only worth scrap now, so may as well keep it :D - only danger being the old Roald Dahl story along similar lines. Would mean his missus call the scrap guy and take $20 for it while Cliff is out :(

Serious side is it is worth what the buyer willing to pay and you willing to accept - ebay can do that. A wrecker can want $800 for a going EA81 with 30 day warranty sitting on a pallet ready to go, $500 for a good 4 speed 4WD box again , out of car ready to go - you have the whole package, they have a good reputation and cult status looming ....

Havent had time to post anything much lately (busy with work and family).
Situation with the MY is I am keeping it.
I repeated to the wife (stated the same when I bought the L series) that the MY was never going to be a drain on the family finances as I will solely be paying for its existance and it was going to be my new Hobby.
We allow ourselves $30.00/week "pocket money" to do with what we please and following the sale of one of my ride on mowers (used to be a hobby but 5 were enough and more will be sold) and the bull bar off the MY as well as other saved funds I now have $700 and building ready for the June rego. With the $30 a week I can sustain the MY for the forseeable future (I hope). With careful planning for upcoming "outages" on the L series (timing belts, water pump, fix leaking oil pump), other mods and keeping both cars running I should be able to keep everyone happy.
Wrecking will never be an option for the MY.
I may need to sell off some of the other things I have collected over the years but the problem is these items are very specific and would have very specific people interested in them (vibration analysis, bearing analysis, balancing equipment for large fan blades, borescopes for viewing the internals of boiler tubes) just to name a few.
I guess ebay is the best option but I doubt in Aus is the right place to sell.
See how we go.

you'd be surprised...ride ons eh ??

And you never know the scope the members of here are into or their mates and family members - try an off topic for sale with item name in title
I'm interested in a trivial way in your vibration analysis ... got no idea what it involves but keen to see pics and or short story

That is a victory for the boys - you keep both :D
